I have a 1997 f350 7.3 powerstroke that shifts into 2 and then downshifts instead of shifting into overdrive, but if I turn overdrive off it works fine. what would cause it to do that.

Most likely the turning on and off might have trigered or burned out your relay switch located in the front of your engine. The overdrive button on your nissan was only ment to be used sporadically and not as a stick vehicle ( According to your expression ). You can purchase this relay in your nearest nissan dealer. Governor pressure sensor or solenoid is going bad. To replace them drop the tranny pan, remove the filter , and the parts are pretty ez to get to. These aren't cheep thou, but replace them as a set. Parts will probly run about $200.

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

some of the trannys has straps in them that sometimes needs to be tightened and that could be the cause of it

Solenoid pack in trans. Position module,is just that. Wrong guess. What tran model do you have? You also have other sensors to consider but have to know the trans your working on and the computer and shift stratagy involved to solve this,even if your throwing parts at it.
