Security on Fords are a pain. First code readers can't/won't help you. It takes a scanner to read security codes. Yours seems intermittent. First, while it is acting OK, if you don't have an extra key for it, go get it and have it programmed it in. If this seems to take care of your problem, go get another and have it programmed. Transponders/keys do die. Thing with the keys, Ford requires 2 keys to reset the security, if your one key is dead. Now you have to have it towed, and purchase 2 new keys from Ford. Ford keys are cheap, But from Ford, your looking at close to $300 for 2 of them.. Scanners will give codes to point you in a direction. Some shops will read codes for free, Just ask them to read the security codes. Active and history codes are what you need to know. You would like to see no valid key/transponder codes. This tells you that it is a bad key, bad receiver or a bad wire close to the receiver. Receivers don't need programmed. It wraps around the ignition lock cylinder. $50 and an hour later, your back on the road.

Which scan tool do I need?

  • Bill Boyd Nov 27, 2016

a scan tool is and fault code reader that is available
it can be done free at some auto parts shops

  • Randy Ohler Nov 28, 2016

Come on Bill, you know better than that. No auto parts store code reader can read security or reset it.

  • Bill Boyd Nov 28, 2016

    sorry randy
    I stand corrected
as the security system ( immobilizer) is part of the cpu program in the ECM it is logical that resetting the ECM with a scan too --fault code reader -- will automatically reset the immobilizer as well

Engine no start

Do you have another key for the car? Try that. If not you'll have to have the keys programmed to the car at the dealer.

It is a transponder system and I haven't come up with any way to get around it without spare keys. If you have only one key you'll have to make a trip to the dealer.
