State what checks would be carried out on the following systems fluids and lubricants

All of the following:

1. Change all fluids including coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and crankcase oil. I would strongly recommend increasing the viscosity of your crankcase oil at this point, and use higher viscosity oil from now on. Change the oil every 3000 miles from now on as well.
2. Replace oil filter and transmission filter.
3. OVER-LUBRICATE (really) all lubrication points on the suspension, pushing out and wiping off as much old grease as you can. Inspect all bushings for signs of cracking, wear, or chapping.
4. Perform a MAJOR TUNE-UP, replacing spark plugs, wires, and coil packs.
5. Check all brake systems for signs of wear and proper operation.
6. Re-pack all wheel bearings, inspecting them for excessive wear or failure.
7. Check front tires for uneven wear. Perform a front-end alignment if there is any uneven wear or cupping on the front tires.
8. Rotate tires, inspecting wheels for cracks or other damage.
9. Check all lights and signals for proper operation and full illumination.
10. Use penetrating oil on the battery connections to eliminate and prevent oxidation of the terminals.
11. Lubricate all power window mechanisms, door latches, door hinges, and power seat mechanisms.
12. Lubricate hood release, trunk release, and any other hinges in the vehicle.
13. Use electric-safe penetrating oil (such as WD-40) on all switches, wiping off excess lubricant.
14. Go a little crazy with the penetrating oil on anything that moves or pivots, again wiping off any excess.
15. Tighten anything loose on the interior.
16. Clean the throttle body using OXYGEN SENSOR SAFE throttle body cleaner (if you're unfamiliar with the correct procedure, look it up or ask me).
17. Replace the fuel filter.
18. Add a bottle of FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER to the tank. Don't add any more fuel until the tank is nearly empty.
19. Check the operation of the shocks/struts, and replace as necessary.
20. Check for engine codes and correct any identified errors.

That should keep you busy for awhile :) It's worth it.

Underhood & Undervehicle

Every 3,000 miles - Replace engine oil & oil filter. Clean battery terminals. Adjust drive belt. Check power steering fluid. Check steering & CV BOOTS for wear and replace if necessary. Lubricate front end suspension.

Every 6,000 miles - Check transmission fluid condition and level. Check brake pads and caliper components - replace if necessary. Lubricate driveshaft U-joints. Rotate tires. Lubricate wiper arm linkage and pivots.

Every 12,000 miles - Adjust engine valve clearance. Replace distributor cap & rotor. Drain and replace engine Coolant. Replace Air Filter element. Replace Fuel Filter. Replace wiper blades.

Every 24,000 miles - Replace Drive Belt. Replace A/C Compressor Drive Belt. ** Change auto transmission fluid & trans filter (this is critical and must be adhered to) - preferrably do a trans flush at same time. Replace drive AXLE fluid.

Every 36,000 miles - Replace HT leads.

Every 2 years - Replace brake fluid (also clutch fluid if applicable). Replace power steering fluid.


** If you intend to keep this vehicle long term, then consider changing the trans fluid & filter every 20,000 miles. This is the secret to automatic transmission longevity.

1. Change engine oil and filter with Mobil 1 0-40 or extended performance 5-30
2. Check and top all other fluids
3. Visually inspect undercarriage for problems
4. Inspect tires and rotate every second small service
5. Check wiper blades, replace if streaky

It should not be a matter of how hot, but when. If it only happens when the car is hot then I would check the level. While checking the level, I would see if there is any blackish stuff in the fluid. If there is then I would have your tranny rebuilt because the clutch material is breaking down and could be the cause of the slipage.

Yes There Is ONLY ONE PLACE for Power Steering Fluid.

ZF Gemmer Steering

The ZF Gemmer steering is permanently filled with oil. There is no drain plug.

ZF Rack and Pinion Steering Without Power Assist

The ZF rack and pinion steering is lubricated for its service life and therefore does not require servicing.
In case of repair, steering components on E21 vehicles are to be lubricated with a sodium-based grease, with a temperature range of -30°C to +75°C .

Ball and Nut or Rack and Pinion Power Steering

Only reputable brand Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) of Dexron® III formulation may be used for the power steering and power steering pump.
In case of brief hydraulic noise after starting at low outside temperatures, we recommend replacing the red ATF with green CHF or LHM oil (see below).

ZF Ball and Nut Power Steering with H31 System

The approved oils for BMW models with power steering and the H31 brake booster system are identical with those oils approved for power steering without the H31 system except for the following:

E32 models with self-leveling rear suspension and mutual oil supply tank in the engine compartment.
Countries with very low outside temperatures (e.g. Canada) had their power steering systems filled at the factory with Pentosin CHF 7.1 since 9/87 through 9/91. This is also to be used on vehicles built before 9/87.

Since 9/91, vehicles now use Pentosin CHF 11S instead of CHF 7.1.

The mixing of CHF, LHM oils and ATF is not permitted.

Pentosin CHF 4548 was used on vehicles built before 9/87 but is no longer available. However, mixing of Pentosin CHF 7.1 with residual quantities of Pentosin CHF 4548 are permiffed in these earlier vehicles. Mixing of these two oils is not permitted for E32/E38 vehicles.

The hydraulic system for power steering and power-assisted brakes must be drained as completely as possible when changing from one type of oil to the other.
All oil supply reservoirs are marked with the type of oil being used - ATF or CHF.
