CAR WASNT FULLY WARMING UP...CHANGED THERMOSTAT...AND CAR OVERHEATS...PUT OLD THERMOSTAT BACK IN AND CAR OVERHEATS....WATER PUMP IS FAIRLY NEW...FAN CLUTCH OK...
Are you putting the thermostat in correctly? It it will not work backwards.
And to confirm that there isn't a different problem, take the thermostat out all together and see if it overheats.
Engine not fully warming up is not usually caused by the thermostat. Stats usually fail closed, not open.
You will want to check the water temperature sending unit or gauge after verify the water temperature with an external calibrated thermometer. You can attach and insulate the external thermometer to the housing where thermostat is located.
Reply back what you figure out. I will be happy to help you further.
V-belt drive or serpentine belt?
Squirt a little water on it and see if it get's quieter momentarily. At least you can rule out the belt and pulley by doing this, and it would lead you to determine if it was the bearing, or the whirring of the fan.
Unless, the whirring was electrical sounding, like a low power, mid frequency relay.
Tell me what you think.
And if you wouldn't mind, award me with a FixYa on the thermostat thing. While I didn't hit the nail on the head, I at least got you to thinking about it while slightly missing the nail and letting you hit your thumb.
Hey, great!
Mind awarding me a FixYa? I would appreciate it.

Usually answered in minutes!
nope, thermostat was stuck open...air in the cooling system prevented circulation...bled system and its fine now...but what do u think about whirring coming from the alternator pulley? i replaced the alternator 2yrs ago...
i got it....was air in the system, preventing coolant from flowing
97 328i low coolant indicator came on, put coolant and drove car then noticed temperature gauge rising( getting hot) checked thermostat (o'kay), water pump appears to be working, but still getting hot and loosing coolant with no apparent leaks. Checked oil dip stick (no moisture on it)
HI, the BMW 328i water temp needle jumps upto HOT and then back down, but the car was never over heating, also get the message of check water coolant, this has been appening for months, I often checked the water level, but was always fine, but now the car has actually over heated. what a pain, so the car over heated but the coolant level was fine.
Why would the gauge show HOT then COLD within a 20 second period, this isnt actually physically possible.?
What is the easiest way to see if the thermostat is gone.?
