1987 Volkswagen Jetta - Page 2 Questions & Answers
Why would I occasionally lose power at random
1/ Massive air leak in intake pipe to throttle body.
2/ Bad electrical wire to rear of cylinder head as engine rocks on it's mounts.
3/ Oil pressure too high holding valves open....new oil pump required.
4/ Loose/cracked connection of idle air hose under manifold.
1997 Polo classic switches off
The first two things I would check would be for vacuum leaks. (Dry-rotted vacuum hoses, fittings, etc.) Another thing you'll want to check is your EGR valve. When an EGR valve sticks open, it will allow exhaust gases to enter the intake, causing rough idle and sometimes stalls. While the engine is running, tap on the EGR valve gently with the ****-end of a screwdriver and see if the problem clears up.
Being this old of a car, I'm willing to bet it's a vacuum leak, but you're the one with your eyes on it. :)
Good luck and I hope this helps! :)
I have a 1987 jetta
It could be the upshift indicator control unit relay (relay #4, second row of relays, 4th from the right). There is also vacuum switch upshift indicator, (usually connected inline of the vacuum line going to the distributor advance, with an electrical plug connected to it). Or it could be transmission switch/upshift indicator, (located on top of the transmission, towards the back of the transmission). I don't think it would be a fuse, because the upshift control unit relay is powered by ignition battery.

Broken water pump
It is below the A/C compressor, above the power
steering pump. It's the silver pump in the picture below with the 3 gold bolts in it. You'll need to remove the belts, water pump pulley, timing cover, it will help to get to stuff thru the passenger side wheel well.
