I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. We need to know the Brand name and Model # for the item B4 we can get you directions. I suggest that if for example, it is a Hoover or Eureka then go to the website address of Hoover.com or Eureka.com to find a cust serv phone # and then call them for the owners manual of that particular vacuum. .
