Thanks to a hint from a user on another web forum, I have found a fix, at least for now.

Specifically, a normal "master rest" on the eTrex Vista is accomplished by holding down the "Page" button and "Enter" (i.e. the click stick) while powering up. You are prompted that a full reset will occur, and after confirming, the machine is reset. However, in my case, this achieved a full reset, but did not fix the date problem.

However, the undocumented "super master reset" on the eTrex Vista is achieved by simultaneously holding down the "Page, "Enter" and "Find" buttons while powering up. You have to hold all buttons in for about 5 to 7 seconds, and you DON'T get the warning message, but when the machine finally restarts, it is fully reset. After acquiring a satellite fix (took several minutes) - lo and behold - my time AND date both seem to be correct!

Oddly, neither Garmin tech support nor the local reseller seemed to know about this method of REALLY resetting the machine - I will pass on the information to them, for future reference.

check the color scheme. you may have accidentally changed it

if it is loading to an sd card reformat the card. otherwise you may have a hardware memory problem

on my 60csx i go to main menu/setup/maps and select the items I want to display. may be similar on the vista

Do you have your unit set for north up or track up? This might cause this problem.

Garmin Express cannot be used to transfer firmware to the etrex Legend. Use: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=25 Legend/Vista/Etex (H)Cx, any unit released prior to the Colorado) have map limits. They will only read 2gb of maps on a card (even if the card is larger) and will only read 2024 segments. You would have to ask Garmin support as to why you cannot use the old disks. It may be irrelevant, but all methods of updating a Garmin do NOT work on all Garmins regardless of age. Even a utility that does work may work only if it is the version applicable to that generation of Garmin GPS units. FYI, even if you have lifetime maps (free), you will only get free replacements for the maps that came upon the Garmin. An Australian Garmin with free maps will not allow you to get free maps while in the USA. You would have to pay for such.
