20 Most Recent Garmin eTrex Vista GPS Receiver Questions & Answers

Thanks to a hint from a user on another web forum, I have found a fix, at least for now.

Specifically, a normal "master rest" on the eTrex Vista is accomplished by holding down the "Page" button and "Enter" (i.e. the click stick) while powering up. You are prompted that a full reset will occur, and after confirming, the machine is reset. However, in my case, this achieved a full reset, but did not fix the date problem.

However, the undocumented "super master reset" on the eTrex Vista is achieved by simultaneously holding down the "Page, "Enter" and "Find" buttons while powering up. You have to hold all buttons in for about 5 to 7 seconds, and you DON'T get the warning message, but when the machine finally restarts, it is fully reset. After acquiring a satellite fix (took several minutes) - lo and behold - my time AND date both seem to be correct!

Oddly, neither Garmin tech support nor the local reseller seemed to know about this method of REALLY resetting the machine - I will pass on the information to them, for future reference.

Searches become slower when the batteries are low. Also need a clear view of the sky - won't work inside buildings or in heavy tree cover.

Have you contacted Garmin directly yet? There website is www.garmin.com When you get to the page go to the top right hand corner of the page and click My Garmin. If you don't have a username and password you can set up one there. You need to contact Garmins technical support either by email or by telephone. It sounds to me that you have a internal component failure and I would suggest you send it to them for repairs. When you contact Garmin ask them what it would cost to look at your unit and repair your unit.

i checked out the Garmin owner's manual for your GPS:

On page 6 it explains that from the satellite page there are four options from which you can choose;

1) Use with GPS off
2) New location
3) Restart search
4) Continue acquiring

If the date displayed on your unit is NOT today's date, select "Restart Search"

Since the GPS does NOT lose memory when the batteries are removed, the problem is unlikely to be that the GPS doesn't know where it was used last.

If the displayed time for your area is not correct, use the main menu to access the setup pages and follow the instructions for setting the time found on page 49. This SHOULD get you on your way.

Try updating the unit's software via the Garmin.com website. This may fix it as there was a satellite launched which was causing problems with some Garmin units.

In your manual, on Page 23. Press ENTER on the waypoint to view the waypoint information page, scroll to DELETE, press ENTER and the waypoint is deleted.

You will need to backup all of your tracks, waypoints and routes to your PC. With the unit off, hold down the page, enter (joystick), and find buttons for 5 to 7 seconds while power up at the same time. Then go outside and let the unit get a fix on the satellites. This will fix the date problem. Once done go to the main menu and select setup and the system. Make sure WAAS is disabled. If you enable this option the date will get messed up again and you will have to do this all over. People! The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.

I had the same problem for months. i don't know what part of this worked or if it was a fluke that it finally worked. I downloaded the newer firmware for the garmin and installed it ( http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/ ) then tried adding maps, that didn't work, then tried 3-4 times resetting the garmin, and each time tried adding maps and it didn't work - turns out I wasn't really resetting it (I think) it appeared that the successful reset was holding down the clicker key and the pages key while starting up, and keeping them held down for a long time (15 seconds?) - there was no sign that it was resetting except a faint illumination, then when I let go of those 2 keys it went through the setup sequence. the only way I knew it had finally reset was when the page came my pointer was in the middle of the united states. I had repeatedly tried resetting before and the pointer/map page came up to where I was last at, so it hadn't really been resetting. I'm very displeased that it took 5-10 tries to get this to work and this happened on 2 units.

I reloaded the maps after it had properly reset and they actually display and are on the map list!
this is the second etrex unit ive had this problem with, and the first one was just as flaky - taking many reset events (see master and super master reset on other etrex threads at this site)

Turning off WAAS and then "Super Master Reset" (then reacquiring signal normally) did the trick for me. Note that it will wipe out ALL saved waypoints, so write 'em down before trying. This link describes it:
