Question edited for spelling, cannistor > canister. Question moved from Washing Machines to Vacuums. All question need 'make MODEL (what it is)'. the discovery electrolux are different. :) The top comes off, not the bottom like other vacuums. After taking the screws out, turn the vacuum on its side (vacuum handle to your left, front of vacuum to your right when looking at bottom). There are two rectangular holes, one on top above the wheel and one on bottom below the other wheel. Place a flat head screw driver in one of the holes and pry gently, pushing handle of screwdriver toward your right. At same time pull up on top plastic of vacuum. Do the same thing for the other side. Top should come off. Best to you.

A thermostat in electronics general mean that there is a overheating issue..

Check & replace any filters that are fitted to machine.
Replace bag with new,
Clear hose of any foriegn items & check floor tool for blockages.

Sure, Disconnect the two wires going directly to the motor. Then apply line voltage directly to the motor terminals. If motor does not turn it is defective - check the brushes for wear or bad contact. If motor runs then the electronics are bogus.

Does it stop and open up by itself when it over heats? It sounds like you did everything you could. The over heat sensor is too sensitive and may need replaced. I had one like that. The bag lid would pop open when the vacuum cleaner is hot.

when pulling the cord out, it should 'keep' it that spot if you pull a certain direction, cant recall if it is up, or down, left or right, and pulling it opposite direction releases the cord again
