how about a bad battery

It is possible it spent too long in transit from China and the battery died. I suggest you reread the instructions to ensure you did everything right and if it won't work as per instructions it must be faulty and should be returned ASAP to the retailer for refund or replacement.

If it does not appear in My Computer I suggest you try it with another computer and if there is no success you should assume it is faulty and requires repair. The device might not be electrically faulty but might have been rendered useless by an internal software problem. A few people have thought removing a lot of files from their Mp3 player was too much work and decided to empty the device by using the right-click formatting option - which is too successful and renders the device useless as it also removes the operating software from the device. Just to take a guess the unit can have broken solder joints in it and any modern good headphone should work in the unit from 8 ohm to 30 ohm types. The ESP button probably has something to do with tone output enhancement. Sound a lot like a term used in Sony Walkman cassette players.
