This works on the 9970 - you can try it.
Brother MFC-9970CDW toner reset instructions so it stops telling you your toner is low:
1.Open the cover, close it and immediately open it again so that the LCD display is showing "Cover is Open - Close the Cover"
2.Now immediately press "1" to get to the PRINTER TONER RESET MENU.
The touch screen gives you choices to reset the toner. Just choose the one you want to reset.

I HAVE REPLACED TONER WITH THE CORRECT BROTHER TONER CARRTRIDGE AND THE MACHINE KEEPS TELLING ME TONER ERROR AND REINSTALL DRUM UNIT..HELP

Hi there,

Below are instructions that I have found from the internet. Hope that they will help.

  • Open the front cover of the printer.
  • Hold down the Go button for 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Then release the Go button
  • Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
  • Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer.
  • Close the front cover of the printer
  • Your drum unit should now be reset
  • MFC / DCP PRINTER SERIES

1.Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge. Wait 1 or 2 minutes.
2.Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge into printer.
3.The error message "Change Drum Soon/Drum end soon" will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit.
4.To clear this error message, you need to reset the drum counter as instructed below.
5.Make sure that the machine is turned on.

For MFC users: To confirm you are installing a new drum, press 1. For DCP users To confirm you are installing a new drum, press the Up Arrow key

7.When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.
    8.Your drum is now reset.

Resetting the drum unit will not improve print quality. It only resets your drum and allows you to continue to print. You decide when to replace the drum unit not the manufacturer!

How do I reset the counter for the drum unit on a Brother MFC 9840-CDW. It says to replace the drum but the unit is printing flawlessly.

On the TN-155 toner cartridge, a mechanical 'flag gear' that will reset the counter for each individual cartridge when first 'triggered'.
After each page print, the appropriate counters are incremented regardless of toner content (that is why it is still printing 'flawlessly') and after a pre-determined count has been reached, you will get a warning to change the drum as is will then be notionally (not actually) empty.
Before you decide to reset the 'flag gear' on the drum, make sure you are not actually nearing the physical empty state ... it might be a wiser decision to purchase a refill kit which should come with instruction on how to fill and reset the 'flag gear' (this needs some dismantling of the drum cartridge) or buy a compatible or genuine toner drum cartridge.
In any case, Google 'Brother drum flag gear' for more information.
Good luck!
