We fully charged our 260W and now it doesn't operate while plugged in. It shows the computer symbol. Please help, we are leaving on a long road trip in 3 days and we were hoping this GPS would come in handy.
Re: Garmin nuvi 260w not operating while plugged in
If you are trying to use your unit in the car via the USB port and not the supplied cable, it will not work. You must use the bracket that came with the unit or the specific charger that came with the unit. The pins in the Garmin USB charger only use two pins whereas a regular charge cable uses 4.

Whenever you see the computer to GPS symbol pop up while using the DC car charger, this is an indication of a loose USB jack (bad connection) between the jack and the printed circuit board.
You should only see this symbol when connected to the PC using the USB cable. You should never see it when using the charger. Please see this link for more information and how to have it repaired:
It is possible as long as the map is Garmin compatible. However even with a trucker navigation map installed, the nuvi 260w will not function as a trucking GPS as the routing and IQ of the nuvi 260w does not have the capability to operate in this manner. The nuvi 260w does not have a trucking mode to allow for the input of specific truck information like truck and trailer length and gross vehicle weight to use as factors on determining the best route for the specific truck/trailer combination. I would recommend using a GPS specifically designed for trucking like the Garmin Dezl. http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-dezl-560lmt.html
You have a short in the wire that runs to your unit. Other than holding the wire in the exact location until your charge is complete you would be better off replacing the charging cord. They should be available at your local shop for around $19-$29.00.
Had the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 260w. It just needed to be reset. Lift up the sticker strip on the bottom of the unit and press the reset tab. Worked like a charm for me. HTH!
I contacted Garmin and they had me disconnect my unit from the computer and down load the updater again. The down load shows up with two files the updater and another one . I had to drag them to my desktop and then drag the one file onto the updater and then plug in my unit and start the updater.

If
your GPS unit powers down before it can fully boot up, the battery will
need to be charged. Please charge the unit with the vehicle power
cable or on a computer for at least three hours. After charging the unit,
it should power on and function normally. If the unit will not charge in
the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and
the power outlet in the vehicle. The nuvi 200 series, 300 series, 600 series, 700
series, 1000 series and the StreetPilot C300 and C500 series do not have user
replaceable batteries. These units must be sent in to a Garmin approved repair
facilities if a battery issue arises. Garmin and Raytech are the only Garmin approved
repair facilities. Raytech is a repair facility for Canadian customers. To repair your device
please contact the specific repair facility for your region. If your device is not
still under the 1 year warranty, there will be a cost associated with the repair of your device.
Yes, you need to charge it. USE the charger that came with it for best results. Some off brand chargers will NOT work. You plugged it into your car and nothing? Even if the batteries are bad it should still work. Is it the Garmin charger?

If your unit will not charge in your vehicle, you may need to replace the
fuse located in the tip of the vehicle power adapter.
Unscrew and remove the silver
or black, round end piece.
Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said.... "when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device" That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery. There is only a mini USB port on a 260. It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
