I have a fax line with packet8 which is a voip carrier. I am having trouble receiving faxes. I was told to change the baud rate on the fax to less than 9600. I don't know how to do it on my brother intellifax 4100e. can you advise?
Thanx,
Alice
There are various reasons behind the issue. But I suggest you to contact with V2VIP experts. They provide VoIP phone services for faxing, calling, video conferencing and more. Get free consultation with V2VIP experts for VoIP Phone system.

The data transmitted during a voice call and a fax transmission are converted to digital pulses in the same way, so sending is not the problem. The problem is at the receiving end. A receiving fax device has to be set to pick up the call before the voice call device, as it is the prompt of the fax transmission signal that makes the receiving fax switch from send or idle to receive mode.
So, if you are faxing over the internet the intended recipient's setup is a complicating factor.
Since faxing to landline fax machines via VOIP would incur a charge, you might consider a cheaper software solution such as eFax (www.efax.com), which enables the receiver to receive the fax as a PDF document attached to an e-mail.
The problem is that the codecs used by VoIP IADs are designed to compress voice, not the analog signals sent and received by modems. In a VoIP Internet world, voice is first converted into packets and then they are sent over the connections that make up our our vast Internet. They may take slightly different times to arrive at their destination. In doing so some packets may be discarded, but the end result is that the receiving VoIP device has enough packets to make a clear and understandable conversation. We suggest these settings on a fax machine for faxing over VoIP; slowing the transmission rate down and allowing the machine to continue receiving the transmission even though a few bits of data were lost, then faxing over VoIP can become more consistent. Our suggestions in many cases can resolve issues that prevent faxing over a VoIP connection, but not in all cases. If after trying and making all the VoIP fax changes we suggest you still cannot fax over your connection then try a Internet Fax service.

This is a common issue with all fax machines that use a voip service. Basically, the reception and transmission features of the fax machine are not compatible with voip service. There is a modification that you can perform that usually allows you to avoid this problem, you must lower all transmission and reception speeds of the fax modem; this allows the data to be properly carried over the line without much loss or degradation.
There is two things i can think of that can cause this. The number one is if you are using a voip carrier (like vonage or att voip or comcast digital voice) they are usually not compatable with fax machines. You will need either a dedicated fax line or you will need to whats called a fax line from vonage or comcast, or from your voip service. If you are using a phone line test to make sure you have it connected correctly buy simply dialing your cell phone or a friends cell phone (let him know you are going to test) once you do this you will hear a ring and an annoying fax machine tone buzzing in your ear. if this is the case and you do have everthing connected correcly i would put a trouble ticket in with your phone company, to test the line condition of your line (to make sure its not shorting or anything like that)
i hope this helps if there was more information i could do better but hopefully this will help out a bit.
Thanks
Steven
Are you connected to a VOIP line for your fax?
A VOIP line can come from a company like Vonage or your local cable co.
If so:
Unfortunatly, faxing over VOIP (Internet) is not always successful. You might want to talk to your VOIP provider if they have a solution.
If not:
Are you trying with the same fax to send and recieve? Some traditional fax machines have probles connecting to fax modems, which is what you have in an Office Jet.
Try having someone else send you a fax and try sending to another number. Otherwise, you might have a defective fax modem.
Use the HP Fax Test The telephone number for this service is 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963). The fax service receives faxes and returns faxes within 5 to 7 minutes to the number contained in the fax header. Solution two: Run a fax diagnostic test
Load plain white paper into the input tray.
Press the Setup button ( ) on the product control panel.
Press the right arrow ( ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
On the Tools menu, press the right arrow ( ) to select Run Fax Test , and then press OK . The fax diagnostic test prints.
Solution three: Check the telephone line and change the HP fax settingsStep one: Test the telephone line
Disconnect the telephone cord from the back of the HP fax product.

Pick up the handset of the telephone and check for a dial tone.
On the single-line telephone, dial the fax number of the receiving fax machine.
If the receiving fax machine answers the call, continue with the next step.
Hang up the single-line telephone.
Use a second telephone line or a cellular telephone to call the telephone number assigned to the HP fax product.
Step two: Change the HP fax settings
Connect phone line into line 1
Press the Setup button ( ) on the product control panel.

Use the HP Fax Test Service to try to send and receive a fax.
If the HP fax product still cannot send or receive a fax, continue to the next solution. Solution four: Check VoIP digital telephone line Using a VoIP telephone service can cause faxing to fail because fax transmissions are sensitive to the timing of the signals used to transmit the fax. If using a VoIP digital line is necessary, changing the Fax Speed Adjustment setting to Medium might improve the ability to send a fax over a VoIP telephone line. Use these steps to change the fax speed adjustment to a lower speed.
Press the Setup button ( ) on the product control panel.
Press the right arrow ( ) to select Advanced Fax Setup , and then press OK .
