My sony vaio shuts off after a few minutes, and i'm thinking it has something to do with the fan. One, i don't hear the fan while it's on. Two, the battery is fully charged. If it is the fan, can it be replaceable without having to spend a whole lot of money?

A way to check to see if the machine is overheating is when you turn on the computer, there should be an option to hit F10 or F2 for the bios. In there, there should be a few temperature readings. Let the machine idle and in the bios if the tempature rises in there there could be an issue with the cooling for the CPU.
I have a Sony VAIO GRS170/GRS175 in use almost every day since 2003. It used to turn off regularly during hot summer days even with its battery fully charged and plugged in. The problem was eliminated by using a small fan to blow air at its side where the air intake was located. Later, the fan was replaced with a notebook cooling pad which was more convenient. You could first try using a fan to see if it makes any difference. If you don't get anymore shut downs, then the problem is definitely due to overheating. You could then replace the fan with a notebook cooling pad.
If the fan is not running you should use the computer because you could cause it to overheat and become very damaged. Right now it is possible that JUST the fan is broken, which would be a simple fix. The reason the computer is shutting off after a few minutes is because it's trying to save itself from melting. You need to remove the fan, find the manufacturer and model number on the fan and order a replcement and install it before you attempt to use the computer any further.
I hope this helps! If not, please comment back and let us know!
take it in and get it serviced probably dust unbalancing the fan. if not then the fan may need replacing and if you dont get it replaced and it fails the computer will shut dont automatically after 5 minutes from over heating. ok i hope that helps, let me know how you go.
kevin,
Is this the pink sony vaio? Looks familiar . . .
The problem with this model of sony vaio is the fan that's why it keeps on shutting down after a few minutes. If you notice there is no activity on the internal fan. The internal fan and heat sink is on the same module.I have already replaced the fan on one of this models and its now working just fine.
just look for a spare fan on ebay . . .
hope this helps . . .
You need to check your fan at the processor, and make sure it's working. also , make sure you have plenty of air circulating inside the tower, something is overheating. either your processor or a hard drive is over heating.
I was going to suggest overheating before I read your own diagnosis; Yes, sound like the fan, but you can check by opening up and watching it. Or install temperature monitoring software such as Speefan; If it is the fan it may well be that there is only one possible replacement - officially. But it is usually possible to cannibalize something cheaper to suit your purpose!
