Just curious if the new batteries are alkaline or rechargeables. If they're rechargeables, make sure they're fully charged, but since alkalines come with the camera, I would use those.
Couldn't find any information about the F689 in the view finder, but my advice would be to return the camera- it just sounds like there's something going on that would require servicing. It should at least be taking the pictures in AF mode.

I HAVE TWO COPIES OF THE MANUAL ONE SHIPPED WITH THE CAMERA AND ONE DOWNLOADED PRIOP TO RECEIVING THE CAMERA. YOUR INFORMATION IS USLESS.
I bought a PENTAX SLR K 100 D camera, loaded a new SD card, formatted it in the camera , inserted new batteries and tried to take a picture, No pictire, the shutter button seens to not be working. There is a f 689 in the view finder. I tried both MF and AF , both AUTO PICT and P ,The camera is set at defalt settings.I need help or must return it asap.

I read and downloaded the manual before buying the Camera. I followed the instructions for everything. All responce from Fix Ya is useles.
