Depending upon the model of your Garmin, these tips should still apply. If your unit uses SD cards for maps, try deleting all other country maps, including Canada and Mexico, if you don't plan on going there. You should do a backup of the SD card data if possible. Use the computer for this. I usually backup the maps then delete some of the larger maps on the opposite coast or side of the country...if I don't plan on visits soon.
If you have external data in your units main memory, try clearing some of that out using your USB hookup to your computer. If your maps are on the main memory, be careful not to get into those Folders (Directories to us Nerds) and inadverently delete the software programming for the GPS unit.
Also, if you're using SD cards, your unit may allow you to use something larger than a 2-4 GB card. Then you should have plenty of memory.
