Download and install Garmin Express to your PC. Connect your GPS to your PC. The program will identify your GPS and allow you to register it and also install any available updates.

Your Garmin should have maps factory installed that load when you turn it on. If you want to update the maps you can 1) take the unit to a Garmin dealer to get updated maps or 2) Connect your unit to PC or laptop with internet through a usb cable and go online to Garmin.com. You must install a small program in the computer- Garmin Communicator - so your unit can communicate with the website. Go to Map Updates and download the update into your gps. It should be available if you downloaded their update software to your computer. I go into it every so often by connecting the gps to the computer thru their software and check for map updates. If the update is large then you will need a larger memory card to handle the updated maps.

It is possible the battery is totally depleted. If it powers on when it is plugged in (either on the computer or with the car charger) then let it charge for abut 6 hours before trying to turn the device on.

Hold the power button in for at least 30 seconds while externally powered. Some of the units have software problems if they are shutdown using the power button instead of letting them auto-shutoff when you remove DC (shut off your car).

Could be that the power available on the usb cable is enough to run the device but not enough to run and charge at same time.

1. Make sure that the charger outlet is supplying +12VDC. Try another device by plugging it into the outlet and seeing if it powers on. 2. Make sure that the fuse in the charger tip is not blown. The tip usually unscrews. It is spring loaded so be careful that the fuse, spring and power tip are not lost. Check the fuse. It should read 0 ohms with an ohmmeter. Make sure that the charger outlet is controlled by your ignition. If the the unit is on all of the time, regardless of the ignition setting, then the outlet is wired directly to the battery via a fuse. 4. Does the unit power up on its internal battery? Is the charger working? If it is bad, the unit will not power up when plugged into a 12VDC outlet.

On a windows, go to you Application list and double click on it. follow the prompts... the newest version can be made to not start with windows if you prefer. You can find that setting by clicking on the Gear in the upper right corner. That would be version 3.2.16. on a mac... just drag the icon from your application list to the trash
