My brother mfc-6490cw printer keeps giving me a paper jam error when printing legal in the 2nd tray. there is no paper jam. i do keep hearing a grinding noise before the error message. HELP CAN't PRINT

it seems that on your model you can only use legal size paper on tray 1 & 2, then you have to set the paper size.

->Clear any loose paper from the paper tray. This will help you locate the jam. You will find it either in front, near the paper tray, or in the rear.

->To clear a paper jam near the paper tray, grip the paper and pull it firmly but gently from the printer. If you find a stack of papers jammed, grab from the middle of the stack and pull.

->For a rear jam, remove the back of the printer. When you find a free edge on the paper, grip it firmly and pull it out.

->Replace the back cover. Press the "Resume" button or turn off the printer, and then turn it back on. Your settings should reset.

->Try printing another document

You have 2 printers because it was inadvertently installed twice. You need to un-install both of them and reinstall the printer again.

Could be paper feed rollers.

But first make sure the back cover is properly closed, and that the paper tray guides (width and length) are properly placed on tray for the paper to be snug.

Any of the 30 series errors say that the carriage is not free to move from side to side across the paper. You need to look close on each side of the machine where the carriage travels to see if there's a paper scrap stopping it. Also the encoder strip could be out of the slot in the carriage assembly. If all is OK you need a shop repair to determine if the logic or carriage pcb's are OK.

this is an error that could get stuck in the memory, try removing the paper tray then unplugging and replugging the printer then when it's warmed up replace the tray.

if problem persists you may have a broken sensor
