My canon MP730 printer went offline after I tried printing an address on a custom sized envelop. A repair Technician remotely got it back on the ready mode but I now get the message that the printer is not responding when I attempt to print. I have tried another usb cable and uninstalled and downloaded the drivers but problem persists.

This is rather "ancient" model as printers go, it come on the market in 2002. It is still available, this meant Canon done something ok with it...

You done everything what is available for home/small office user. I will try to help you solve this problem, but seem like motherboard on this printer is on the way out.

Please follow this procedure:

1. download and install ccleaner for all users, do not install yahoo or any other bar! I hate all bars with passion!
2. disconnect USB cable from your printer (or computer - whichever is easy)
3. uninstall all printer related programs and delete printer from printer folrder
4. switch off computer and wait 20sec
5. switch computer on and run it in safe mode (taping f8 during boot-up will allow you this selection) as an administrator
6. run ccleaner, as last run registry clean
7. restart computer in "normal" mode
8. install your freshly downloaded printer software and when ask, connect USB cable.

Simple removal of the printer and re-installation do not work as Windows have nasty habit of hiding old files adn re-use them even if you supply new ones.

If printer do not respond to this installation, to verify that this is a problem, try to install it on another computer. If it works on another computer, then you have something installed on this computer which prevent you from correct installation of the printer.

If that is the case - disconnect you rcomputer from network, disbale firewall and antivirus, then run ccleaner and clean everything what you do not need, go to tools and remove any program which you do not use or need, check your boot sector and disable all junk loading on the bootaup, be it any messanger, itunes, adobe or whatever installed itself there but it is not essential to run the computer. Run ccleaner again, then re-boot in safe mode and run ccleaner again, including registry.

Repeat steps 2 to 8 from above. but with disabled antivirus and firewall.

If your computer still will not see the printer, change usb port.

Hope this short advice will solve your problem, please let me know if it worked, canon unfortunately do not provide firmware flush options for home users.

I'm having trouble addressing an large envelope the printer wants to print from the upper photograph tray and not accept the envelope from the lower tray. I have the MX922 printer.

The upper tray on my 6120 has adjustable guides on either side of the document and can be set from 2" to 8.75" wide. It is not intended just for photos! I use it for ALL envelopes that will fit. I use the MS WORD "Mailings", "Envelopes", "Options", "Envelope Size" menu to tell the printer what size the envelope will be (any size not listed in the standard list can be customized from the CUSTOM option at the bottom of the envelope list). Your word processor should have something similar. Running from the tray should be a straighter run and will actually place less distortion stress on the envelope.

Use a mailing label for anything larger than 8.75". You can download a program from Avery (and probably other label manufacturers) that really makes labels simple to produce. Labels should also be run from the rear tray if possible so they won't wrap around your rollers.
Happy Printing.

How do you print an address to an envelope? And can you only print #10 envelopes?

No, you can print on any envelope size. As far as addresses are concerned, you need to setup a template for the envelope size in your program. What program do you have for this function, do you have Microsoft Word or come other word processor like that?

You must have a record. hp p1006 printer envelopes hang in print que. I have spent many hours with your staff and the problem hasn't been solved?

Envelpopes should be printed using the feed tray located in the front of the printer not through the paper cassette. Try this: Follow these steps to print on envelopes from a computer running Windows. NOTE: For specific details on formatting text for printing on envelopes, consult the help files in the word processing software. For best results, consider using a label for the return address.
  1. Click File , and then click Print . The Print dialog box opens.
  2. Depending on the software program, click Properties , Options , Printer Setup , or Preferences . The printer Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Select Envelope as the paper type.
  5. From the Size drop-down list, select the applicable size. To create a custom size envelope, use the following steps:
    1. On the Paper/Quality tab, click Custom .
    2. Click in the Name text box, and then enter a name for the custom envelope size.
    3. Click in the Width text box, and then enter the width. NOTE: Make certain the size is in inches. Click the Use Millimeters/Use Inches button to toggle between using millimeters and inches to define the custom paper size.
    4. Click in the Height text box, and then enter the height.
    5. Click Save .
  6. Click Apply to save the settings.
  7. Click OK to print the envelopes. NOTE: An error message might display asking to load an envelope into the manual feed tray. This might occur even if the envelopes are loaded. Make sure the envelopes are loaded, and then click Continue . The product will continue printing from whichever input tray contains the envelopes.

Note:
  • Be sure to set the printer driver setting properly. If you do not, the address will be printed in the wrong direction.

  • It may be required to change the paper size option to 'Envelope' in File Page Setup menu.
    Note:

Printer Driver Settings:

1Select Envelope in Media Type.

  1. Select the size for envelopes.

    * In Windows, select DL Env. or Comm. Env. #10 in Page Size.
  2. * In Macintosh, select DL Envelope or #10 Envelope in Paper Size.
  3. Select Landscape in Orientation.

Can't print custom paper size on HP Photosmart C6180

Printing anything other than 8.5" x 11" I have found challenging but there is a way around it. When you are ready to print select Print and go to
"Properties" button beside the name of the Printer.
Select normal for your print quality,
Paper source select Main Tray,
in resizing options select the size you need. In this case you would make a custom or perhaps the Card Envelope 4" x 6"
Select "Scale to paper size"
under the Resolution button there is a box "Show preview before printing" I select that so that I can see for sure before printing that it is recognizing my special paper and not the usual 8.5 x 11 sheet.
If it all looks good and it should, START PRINTING

You have to do this everytime you want to print a special size paper. If you print a lot of this size of paper custom name it something easy like your name"Krissy card env" so you can find it quickly and remember easily the process you follow.
