Try booting o a linux livecd like puppylinux, if everything works fine, you know that its windows causing the problem. I would also push all motherboard power plugs firmly into their sockets, it could be you knocked one to usb power when you installed the new disc.
A few thoughts:
If USB, try a PS/2 keyboard.
If PS/2, try a different keyboard (or check the keyboard on a different computer)
If yes, this seems to be a problem of the Windows installation (USB drivers?)
If no, most likely a motherboard issue.
A lot depends on where the keyboard and mouse are plugged in. I have seen in the past that the USB in the back works better than the front. Are these the original keyboard and mouse? If not, use the original until after Windows loads the desktop.
The purple port is a PS2 port.
If you have power to the keyboard, you will be able to access the setup (BIOS) screen by hitting the key that is listed in the very first screen you see. They are one of the F keys above the qwerty keys.
F2 is used in some HP systems. Look for the information as to which key when the system starts. If you see the key, and are able to press it in time, you should get to the system BIOS.
If you can access this, the keyboard is working. If you cannot, it has failed or the PS2 port is bad. If this is the case, try a keyboard with a USB port. You can get them at any computer or office supply store.
