Hp laserjet 1020 meltdown

The printer advised that the cartridge needed replacing. Did that put the new one in and the paper would come through, but without any toner. Took the new cartirdge back to the cartridge store to test it. It was fine. So, brought the new cartridge back home and re-instralled it. Now the printer won't turn on at all. I've checked all connections, tried a different power outlet and kettle cable. It looks terminal. I've had it for about two years, but it has had the easiest life, probably only 400-500 pages printed and no bumping or anything. No trouble ever before. I'd really appreciate your advice cause i need it to work and can't afford expensive repairs or replacement.

I've already tested the power cord on a 1010 hp and tried different wall outlet. It was Previously in a surge protected power board. Followed the steps you reccommended. I know the printer is deffective that is why i tried you guys so i wouldn't have to service it. Can you do better than telling me to service my printer? I thought you were going to solve my problem.

o.k. well its certainly not the power cord but i'd already established that. I did try the hp manual - from recommended download but they obviously don't count on the printers completly shitting themselves as there is no infromataion relating to absolutely no activity. As the problem went from bad to worse is it likely to be two problems or the same one? I spoke to a repair man than apparently specialisese in these things and he thought that one of the springs or paperclip looking thingys that register the print cartridge may have been acting up causing initially no toner then complete power failure. I looked and they seem fine to me. But he is going to charge me a fair bit more than its worth especially if you add the cost of the new cartridge just to look at it. And he seems to think the alternative is way expensive and not woth it - something to do with the power input. Also talked to hp support online - no help. Is there anyway of being reasonably sure of the problem so i know how to proceed i.e fix it or drop it off a tall building.

Hi,

Try this out:

Some printers require time to turn on. These printers may or may not give feedback in the form of blinking light(s). Wait up to a minute for the power light to come on before proceeding with the steps below. Instructions If the printer uses a power adapter (module), follow the instructions below. If the printer uses only a power cord, see the section below entitled “ If the printer uses only a power cord .” If the printer uses a power module Follow the steps below to ensure power is properly supplied to the printer:

  1. Check the power module part number against the part number listed in the User’s Guide to ensure the proper power adapter is being used.
  2. Disconnect the power cord or adapter from the wall outlet.
  3. Disconnect the printer data cable from the printer.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the printer, wait thirty seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  5. Disconnect the power cord from the power module and reconnect the power cord to the power module. This may not be necessary if the power module has a permanently attached power cord.
  6. Reconnect the power cord directly into a working wall outlet. If the power cord was plugged into a surge protector or power strip, plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet instead. NOTE: "The HP Photosmart 8100, 8400, and HP Deskjet 6000 series printer power cords feature a green LED built into the power plug. If the LED is not glowing, the power module may have failed. Proceed to step 7 below.
  7. If the printer still will not turn on or the power LED built into the power cord is not glowing, plug the printer into a wall outlet in another room. If the printer or power LED turns on when connected to an electrical outlet in another room, there is a problem with the power in the original room.
  8. If there is still no power to the printer, then the power module, cord, or printer may be defective. Try the power module/cord on another HP Deskjet or Photosmart printer, of the same model if possible, to see if the power module is functioning. If the power LED is still not glowing, the power module may be defective. Replace the power module and cord.
  9. If the power module/cord works on the other printer, then this printer is defective. Service your printer.
  10. If you cannot determine whether the problem is the printer or the power module/cord, or if another printer is not available to test with, replace the power module/cord first. If this does not resolve the issue, service your printer.
If the printer uses only power cord Follow the steps below to ensure power is properly supplied to the printer:
  1. Check the power module part number against the part number listed in the User’s Guide to ensure the proper power adapter is being used.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Disconnect the printer data cable from the printer.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the printer, wait thirty seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  5. Reconnect the power cord directly into a working wall outlet. If the power cord was plugged into a surge protector or power strip, plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet instead.
  6. If the printer still will not turn on, plug the printer into a wall outlet in another room. If the printer turn on when connected to an electrical outlet in another room, there is a problem with the power in the original room.
  7. If there is still no power to the printer, then the power cord or printer may be defective. Try the power cord on another HP Deskjet or Photosmart printer to see if the power cord is functioning.
  8. If the power cord does not work on the other printer, it is defective. Replace the power cord.
  9. If the power cord works on the other printer, then this printer is defective. Service your printer.
  10. If another printer is not available to test with, carefully inspect the power cord for damage.
  11. Inspect the power cord for visible damage. If the power cord is damaged, replace the power cord first. If this does not resolve the issue, or if the power cord looks fine, then service your printer.

Goodluck,

Well go through the manual once,im sure u will find something related to it.You can download it from here.

Enter ur email id thn download it..

And im further looking for a sol. to ur problem..

well If it isn't the power cord, or a door interlock, then it's probably not worth fixing. The remaining two choices are too expensive to fix on most desktop inkjets. The power supply and engine controller would most likely cost more than the replacement printer.

Or may be u can evn try this:

If your power cord to your printer has a black box that's the power supply. There is a fuse inside that box. If your printer won't turn on and you have that kind of box on the cord it may be a blown fuse. It's tough to open but it could save you a bundle of money if all you need is a fuse. If the fuse is blown but it's soldered in place just go to a Radio Shack and get a piggy back fuse holder and the correct fuse. About $2.00 worth of parts and you're good to go!

    Hope this works!!

I would advise also opening the door on the back of the printer (if this printer has one), removing any paper trays and cartridges too. All of these can obscure places where paper can jam. Be thorough as even the tiniest scrap can cover a vital sensor.
