Is this a raid? if so :You will need to boot from your CD. When windows starts loading, at the bottom of the screen it will ask you to press F6 to install RAID/SCSI drivers. Do that. You will need to have your RAID Drivers on a floppy disk for this to work. You can get the RAID drivers from your motherboards website and/or any CD's you may have received with your motherboard
from what i can remember u need to push S to choose the a drive and raid driver u need then xp will be able to get to rec console
Looks like Windows is corrupted... probably got infected...
First thing... is there any important information on your friends laptop saved... like files, folders... anything he/she does not want to lose?
If so, there are a couple of options... easiest thing is to download a Live Cd linux distribution like puppy linux or damn small linux and then copying the important files to a USB stick or something, but if you don't know Linux very well this may take you a long time.
Another option is to use the Windows cd and reinstall the system... typically you can reinstall into the same directory (overwriting the previous corrupted one) or a different directory like C:/Windows2 and booting into the new one instead. Both of these solutions will work, but will probably not solve the problem that corrupted Windows in the first place.
If you choose second option, I suggest once you boot into the fixed windows to copy any important information to a USB drive, then format your hard disk and reinstall windows from scratch.

you usually dont have to change the boot order to boot from a cd. the bios should check the cd rom before booting from the hdd. However, if that isnt the case, you can always change the boot order.
go to the bios settings while u turn your laptop on. (It should be "esc" for HP. a message will be displayed at the bottom of the screen indicating the key. if not, try esc, f10, f11, f12. either one of them should work).
go to the boot order settings (May have a different name- boot settings/ boot priority settings/ advance boot options etc.).
when yo turn the pc on, while the compaq logo is displayed, you should see a msg at the bottom of the screen indicating which key will get you into the bios settings. It should be esc for HP. otherwise try f10, f12 ,f2, f8. It's got to be one of these
hold that key down while you turn the laptop on, before the operating system loads.
HP pavillion will not load
if you are able to see the HP logo that tells you that bios is loading but when it gets to the operating system on your hard drive, it can not be located. One of the reasons can be a bad hard drive if it is it needs to be replaced, turn the computer over and check that access covers, one shows you a hard drive logo and it should have 1 or 2 screws, remove those or just loose them up.
You may have to stick a tiny flat screwdriver under the cover to pop it off, after you do that remove the screws that hold the hard drive; there should be a plastic or tape tab to pull the hard drive out. Go ahead and pull it out, make sure that the adapter on the hard drive (shiny box) it is properly attached. check the prongs on the computer where the hard drive goes check for dark spots (burn like) if everything looks fine, re insert hard drive (make sure that it makes proper contact) and close the lids turn it on and see if it loads.
if it doesn't then you know how to replace a hard drive you just have to have your cds' to load the operating system
It sounds as though you might have a problem with BIOS.
You should remove your motherboard battery (little round silver disc) and if you can find (or Google motherboard model#) the CMOS reset jumper, you can remove the battery for 30 seconds and put it back in and reset the CMOS, then see if it boots. If it doesn't, you might need to flash the BIOS, which is not recommended unless you know what you are doing.
try plugging a standard pc keyboard into the ps2 slot ,if it has one, if not use a usb keyboard. That should tell you if the keyboard is malfunctioning. As for using the hard drive with no caddy it should be fine as long as you pad it it securely, to stop it being knocked about etc when moving the laptop. Also you will need to enter the bios and set ideo 0(the hard drive) to auto detect. As it is more than likely detecting the old hard drive in the bios settings not the new one?
Some very old Sharp PCs require a Setup Diagnostics Disk to access BIOS.
Shuttle - Glamor G-Series, D'vo, Prima P2-Series, Workstation, X Mini XPC, Surveillance
Press F2 or Del on startup.
Sony - VAIO, PCG-Series, VGN-Series
Press F1, F2 or F3 after turning on the computer.
Toshiba - Portégé, Satellite, Tecra
Press F1 or Esc after powering on to access BIOS.
The following companies are either closed for business or no longer manufacture or support mainstream computers systems so verifying the following BIOS access information is nearly impossible. I have included what I could dig up for anyone who might be interested: ARI / ALR / AST (Advantage) - Press the Ctrl+Alt+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del keys. Cybermax - Press the Esc key. Tandon - Press the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys.
Do you have the original setup disc available?
