If you had your linksys router controlling the DSL connection, it was most likely a PPPoe connection requiring a username and password. Most cable companies have dynamic IP address and do not require a username or password.

Open your internet browser, IE, Firefox etc and go to 192.168.1.1 >
Enter your router username and password, typically admin and admin

In the setup tab, change your connection FROM whatever is listed there and make sure it is Autumatic DHCP Save your settings, and restart the router.

You should be fine.

Driver router linksys

You do not have to use the cd or driver.
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.

HOW DO I CONNECT DSL LINE TO LINKSYS WRT54GS

The WRT54GS does not have a jack to connect a phone/DSL line to, so in order to use this router with a DSL connection, you'd have to connect the DSL line to a modem and then connect the modem to the router, or connect the DSL line to a computer if you have an internal modem, and then connect that computer to the router.

I just switched from cable modem to dsl modem..dsl modem gets on the internet when connected directly to computer..once connected to router doesnt connect to internet

Your new ISP is DSL. the router was working before with the cable modem. The settings for the cable and DSL ISP are different. Now your computer is working when you connect it directly to the DSL modem. that means the modem is working.
The DSL modem works on 2 different modes.
You will need to check which mode is your modem working on and according to the settings of your modem you will need to set up the router.
To change the settings of the router, you will need to open the set up page of the router.
Click Here for more information about the router set up.

Trying to Install a wireless router WRT54GS; ISP Cox Cable

I don't know what type of internet connection you have. If you have cable internet connection, you can copy the mac address of your modem to your router - that's what you call, cloning. If you have DSL connection, you can just obtain an IP Address from the modem to the router. If it's an Internet connection that is requires authentication, you can use the PPPoE type of connection. You can configure your router to any of the mentioned configuration above.

DSL line disconnects on WRT54GS only

Try to change the LAN IP address of your router to 192.168.2.1 by accessing the router's Setup page. You also need to set your Westell modem to "full-bridge mode". You need to ask assistance from your ISP to bridge the modem. After that, set-up the Linksys router to PPPoE then power cycle it.

Re-installing my linksys

Before you can use your linksys router again, you must configure first your AT&T modem under bridge mode. If the AT&T modem is already set to you may connect the devices (modem router and PC) must be switched OFF first.
after the devices had been connected,...
1) turn ON the AT&T modem first, wait for the DSL light to stay solid
2) turn ON linksys router, wait for the lights to stay solid
3) turn ON computer, wait for your desktop screen
4) try to access Internet Explorer

Cnnecting to cable modum

To access your router you should goto http://192.168.0.1 - It should explain in the manual.

You may have to set the router in Cable Modem mode as it may be in DSL mode now.

I hope this may help.

ALSO! There should be a little hole in the back that you can put the tip of a pen into to press a button and it will reset the router back to factor defaults. Default settings would be cable modem mode. Be sure to have the router powered on and press the button down for 10 secs and notice the lights on the router should flash. After that power down the router, by unplugging the power and the plug it back in. It should be set back to factory defaults.
