Error E42 means scanner or logic board defective,first try to change the scanner if the problem persist you need to replace the logic board.

E42 means there is a scanner error. Canon website suggests you turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord from the power source. Wait approximately ten minutes, plug the power cord back in and power on the machine.

If the error is not resolved, a machine service error may have occurred. Please contact your local Service Center.

MP145 E42 is scanner error, it means there is a problem in the scanner, for errors like this can not be reset, try to check the lights scanernya, whether at the time of the printer on the lamp flame scanner or die, if death mean damaged, then check, scanner motor cable, ribbon scanner cable to the mainboard of the printer (unplug and plug it back), if still errors check the movement of stuttering .

sounds like door lock is faulty e42 is saying door is still open. could be wiring to door lock also.

E42 means scanner error. It's posible to be dirt scanner timing sensor or the whell. You can check videos on youtube to find how can fix this issue in detailed mode.
