Printer powers up and will successfully print a test page. It is connected to my Toshiba lap top via usb cable. Windows Vista recognizes hardware, but fails when I try to print. I have property settings set to "usb port" and "bidirectional" is checked (I have tried unchecking bidir. also). I have tried deleting the printer and re-installing, I have rebooted many times.

Empty cartridge maybe?
Otherwise it's simple: selt-test page(by printer button) printed ok - it's outer problem. Self-page is blank - it's inner problem. And so on... use Golden Section method
Sandra, Do you see the HP LaserJet 1160 printer listed in Start (Windows Icon) > Control Panel > "Hardware and Sound/Printers" (Control Panel Home), or "Printers" (Classic View)? If you do not see the printer listed, run the installation from the CD that came with the printer, or you can download the drivers from the HP support site at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=410620&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=410618&taskId=135note: make sure you choose the correct version (either Windows Vista, or Windows Vista x64). If you're unsure, you can check by right clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Properties". Under the system category you will see "System Type" noting either a "32-bit operating system" or "64-bit operating system". If you do see the printer listed in control panel/printers, then: Are you able to successfully print a test page? (Right-click the HP LasterJet 1160 and select "Properties", then select "Print Test Page").If not, does the test page show up in the printer queue? (You can check the queue by simply double clicking the printer). Let me know what you find!- Joshua
You mentioned parallel usb. The HP4L only has parallel. Make sure you specify LPT1 as the port you want. Try reinstalling the driver. It should be in the list of drivers.

Driver could be corrupt. Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
reinstall the printer driver.
Windows operting system have the printer drivers. you don't need to download it.
if you really want to, goto HP.com>> service and support.
For this you first uninstall any previous Driver. Install the Drivers after restarting your system. After Installing the drivers connect the Printer. Note down now the Driver must be automatically work because HP1320 is a plug n play Printer. If not change the cable used to connect the PC with Printer and if the Printer is auto detected, you will be able to print the Test Page or any other page.
