Copying from TAPE to PC requires 4 things. The video cam where the TAPE will be played, a FIREWIRE compatible cable, a FIREWIRE card installed on your computer and a SOFTWARE that supports a firewire device that would record the video.
Unlike Digital Videos that you can just copy and paste the video file from the video cam to the computer, the tape to pc transfer is more of recording the video in from the video cam by playing it in real time while the computer is recording it.
This is a sample of a FIREWIRE card that is installed inside a computer. An external USB version of this is also available.
This is a sample of a FIREWIRE cable.
Windows MOVIE MAKER is an example of a software that can be used to record the videos. It supports FIREWIRE devices.
As the camera uses miniDv for video capturing , it need to be converted
in to digital format through a "firewire card". a Fire wire card is a
PCI Card for data transfer. Check whether your system is having the
same. If not, you have to buy one. In addtion to that you need a video
captutirng software like "Sony Vegas" or "Pinnacle Studio."

please mention what dvd recorder you have or you want to transfer movie files on PC hard disk.
In order to transfer the taped video, the software that came with the camera, has to be installed. Once this is done, plug your camera into the computer, using the USB cord, and it should be recognized, and the software program should kick in and you can then transfer the files. Sometimes you will have to go to the actual drive itself and copy the images over to your folder of choice.
wow, i have the same exact problem. im using a canon too. and i dont have an installation CD or anything, because i baught my camera at a pawn shop. the only thing i can think of is that i might be using the wrong type of fire wire cord? do i need to use a DV fire wire cord? i have no clue.
i have a samsung sc-d353 and i was wondering if i can transfer the video that i
have recorded on the tape and transfer it on to the computer using the
usb cord if so how would i go about doing this?
You will need a firewire cable to successfully transfer video from your tape to your computer. It also greatly helps to have a firewire port on your computer. Once you have connected your firewire port on your camera to the firewire port on your computer, you can use windows movie maker to transfer video to your computer. (File > Import for Digital Video Camera)
