I have a Frigidaire FRT21IL4FW3 (less than 1 year old), and found the freezer had thawed. The refrigerator seemed cold, but it's in the garage during December in Michigan. When I changed the cold setting to colder in the freezer compartment it seemed to come on, so I measured the output temperature in the freezer. It seems to be putting out cold air (-5 degrees) and the freezer compartment had cooled down to about 0 degrees, so I left it for about 4 hours to see if it would maintain temperature. After waiting, the temp in the freezer compartment was back up to about 30 degrees, and cycling the temp control in the freezer compartment had no effect. When I cycled the temp setting in the refrigerator compartment, the fan and compressor came on, and the freezer compartment once again began cooling. Are there seperate controls for both compartments? Where should I start troubleshooting?
Solution Found! The problem is when the temperature surrounding the
refrigerator in the garage falls to < 45 degrees, the thermostat
regulating the refrigerator will not call for the compressor to kick in
to provide cooling (it's temperature requirements are being met). Since
there is no demand, the compressor will not cycle, which is how the
freezer is kept cold, and the freezer eventually warms up to match the
refrigerator temperature. Frigidaire makes a "Cold Kit" that I ordered
and installed from RepairClinic.com for $22 (Item
#: 1037646; Description: Garage kit). It's basically a strip heater
that runs off the control power to warm the thermostat and causes the
compressor to cycle once to twice a day to keep the freezer frozen.
After installation, the refrigerator stays at 40-45 and the freezer
stays around 0 degrees.
Happened too me tonight in scotland -3 for days went out and all my freezer contents were defrosted ive turned down thermostat too hopefully kick in compressor
Good Day, I live out in Ca. and have only experience temp's like what you guys endure once in my lifetime. But I grew up, with Bart Starr, he was my guy, leading the Pac. in the Ice Bowl. I'm hoping to get one of the guys to add to my comments I'm going to suggest to you, there are many guys more qualified with more experience than I, that might offer more. Sometimes with Refrigerators and Freezers, is that during periods of long cold spells, the appliances can actually NOT produce enough Run-time to sustain the foods inside. In other words, because its so damn cold it will go off and if the thermostat doesn't sense the temp has risen to the point it needs to come back on, it won't. Ice creams, because of the salt content, bread (it has no density) these will be the first foods to be effected. 20yrs ago I remember we have a strip heater... wr49x211 I think it was, to add heat to get the thermostat to cycle back on.... Check around, ask -Re-post and List it.. I want somebody who knows Refer's, Lives and Works in tough weather... that'll get an answer

Basically same problem. We keep our fridge in the garage and for some reason the top freezer thaws out. Have not done anything to resolve as I have no idea where to start.
I have A Kenmore Side by side 20.6.
The freezer is not getting cold enough to freeze the food.
I hear a click from the compressor side but it does not start.
The compressor is worm. but nothing else around it is cold or has any frost.
The tray is dry.
The frig side seems OK so far since I noticed the problem just two hours ago.
Need to set freezer temp to 30 degrees
