Resist the temptation to run the motor. If the motor is unable to operate the machine, it could damage the motor.

Take it for service.

Check to see if the bobbin case is in correctly. Jamming occurs when something isn't in machine properly. Try taking out the needle & manually turning the hand wheel slowly. It could be just a bent needle too.

How to turn safety lock off on nx-400

Initially, the "safety device has been activated" error is usually caused by a jammed thread or fabric.
2 possible causes
The upper thread has become tangled around the bobbin case,
The needle is bent and hitting the needle plate, so the machine stops.
To fix this error.
1, Unplug your machine,
2. Remove the needle ( I know it is in a down position and locked up) but you can be able to remove it.
3. After removing the needle, turn your hand wheel if still locked up or stiff. Remove your needle plate and remove all your threads both upper and lower.
4. Clean your bobbin area using a brush take a deep breath then blow.
5. After that, try to turn your hand wheel again, if the hand wheel moves freely, rethread your machine and replace your needle with a new one. Then try to sew a few stitches using a hand wheel (do not sew using a pedal) if the hand wheel creates stitches that is the time to sew using the pedal.
If the problem is still there, you possibly have broken gear that needs to be replaced

My sewing machine has stopped working, it was working ok , just a bit noisier than usual but now the needle wont move at all, even if i try to turn the wheel by hand

the machine may need oiling, check in your sewing machine manual to see about oiling it, it's also possible that the machine could have a damaged or broken part inside,,

Motor is fine, but won't sew

since the machine has been setting for 20 years, it needs to be serviced
the old grease & oil have probably turned the gunk. the servicing can also tell if any parts are damaged

My machine jammed up with some thread under the fabric but nothing by the bobbin. but the needle won't move it just hums when I try try to sew.

If you can't turn the handwheel, then there is thread jamed up in the hook. You can try to rock the handwheel back and forth to try to get the thread out. If you do get it free, try to sew with it. If it won't sew properly you might have a damaged position finger or it's out of time. You'll need to take it to a PFAFF dealer.

Singer 600 touch and sew

Hold the tail of the needle thread loosely.
Turn the hand wheel toward you (counter clockwise) and lowerthe needle into the hole in the plate.
Turn the hand wheel until the needle rises back up to it's highest position.
Gen
You will see a loop of thread wrapped around the upper thread.
Open the loop and find the free end of the bobbin thread.
Voila!
Now you can sew.
