I turn my camera on and I set it up and I try to take a picture but it has this purple and black on no picture to be taken.

Sounds like a defective CCD imager. You may be in luck. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Please check the following two links for more info:

The symptoms you're describing sound like a classic case of having a faiiled CCD image sensor.
First try pressing the display (DISP) button on the back of your camera several times to see if your image returns at any time. One of the three display modes is "off" to preserve battery life. Your problem may be as simple as inadvertently pressing this button into the off mode.
If that doesn't work, try doing a reset and then removing your batteries from the camera for a few minutes, reinstalling them and turning the camera on to test the LCD screen.
If your screen is still black, but you can clearly see pictures taken previous to the problem, and you can clearly see the menu system when you press the MENU button, then you likely have a CCD sensor problem. Contact Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 to have the camera repaired.

Bad news & Good News
The BAD news is that it sounds as if your CCD has gone wrong which is the part of the camera that captures the image. The CCD is made by Sony & there is alot of dodgey ones out there that Sony have said sorry about. (type "bad CCD" on a search engine & you should be able to get more info)
You say that the icons appear so the rear LCD must be working. If the playback of pictures from a card also works then it is almost certainly the CCD at fault.
The GOOD News is that your model is one of the ones that is listed as eligible for a free replacement of the CCD. You will need to contact Canon & they will advice of what to do. I have sent several cameras of different makes back to the agents for repair & all have been repaired for free. The fault you have first occurred a few years back now so there will probably be a point where the agents will say enough is enough & stop the free repairs.
Hopefully you will be eligible for the free replacement.

My mother has this model camera. I believe there is a setting in the main menu that will allow an energy saving mode that sets the display time or no display. If not it's under warranty and your retailer should replace it if it is within 30 days of purcase date.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera).
