more likely valve clearance adjustment
B&S engines stretch the valve stems and when hot the valves to not seat properly and are hard to start until the valve stems cool and the clearance allows the valves to seat properly
coil problems will fail earlier

check the bearings in the auger sounds like the froze up and now they need to be replaced (the smoking you saw was from the belts slipping on the pullies)..good luck
I had the same problem. Turns out,( and I didn't believe it when I was told) but, my problem turned out to be cheap (inferiour) plugs and wired. I was reccomended to use NKG plugs and Borg-Warner wires.
the problem could be the snow is to heavy for the motor to keep up, if thats the case you may need to upgrade to a more powerful model or try not to overload it. take it a little slower so the motor can keep up. but try tightening the belt. with your pointer finger push down on the belt it should have about a half inch give, if it moves more than that its too loose and probably slipping under load
