    I bought this gift for my father, and I have to say that thisis the worst gift ever. The purpose of buying the gift is to be able to find our way on family outings. This machine takes us on scenic route through camden! There has not been an episode where we haven't gotten lost. And to find out there are no updates available for FREE. I sure you already have the checked the main Web site. All of the map Updates provided from Omnitech are in the SD card form. sold at Staple's and other stores. Getting an update free, I sorry to say that Pirating software is out side the realm of FixYa site. But here is the Web site for 2009 updates and Staples sell the 209 updates for $79.00 mite find it cheaper from other Internet sites NavSupport Website: www.NavSupport.net/gps/15223/

There are no free map updates for the StreetPilot Series.

The newer models do come with a free update that must be downloaded within 60 days of purchasing the system.

There are utilities for adding POI (Points of Interest) as well as Browser plugins that can be used to add Favourite Locations from Google maps. these updates are available from the garmin website.

There are no free updates for Garmin GPS's. If you have a handheld model, there are free maps on the internet but they are not supported by Garmin.

Touch screen stop working
Hello,
Omnitech GPS systems are very decent for me. I have 2.
There were several reports of GPS problems beginning on or about 11-14 June 2009. This is due to the GPS navigation messages rollover from 255 to 0. Some GPS systems fail to accommodate this behavior; Omnitech is one of them.
Staples did provide a firmware update a few days later. There are also other firmware updates available on the net. I personally successfully update the firmware and resolve the problem around June 15, 2009.
Otherwise, the problem should go away after 1-2 weeks.

Omnitech GPS 16878
  • Try to press and hold the power button for 15 sec when the unit is off
  • then when the gps on check if it will go thru but if it is not try to press the reset button for 10 sec and then release.
  • if still not work try to charge the battery sometimes the cause of the freezing of the screen is when the unit is low in battery and also check the website if there is a new firmware for your gps if there is download it.

Displays 'Waiting for GPS signal' forever.
It all started June 13th some type of bug with the software. Omnitech has posted a fix for the 16878. Here is the link describing the problem and the fix.
