First of all, 64 bit software will only install on a computer that has a dual processor or higher. Secondly, Win 8 is a piece of garbage. XP is the fastest operating system of the group since it is the smallest size. If it is doing the job for you I would not upgrade. If the upgrade bug is getting the better part of you, I would consider Win 7 but NEVER 8.
not every motherboard or on board video is compatible with windows 8
what windows was it running previously
windows 8 was designed for 64 bit platforms which requires 4 gig of ram but you have to also take into account the other hardware components and there maximum configuration
i have run win 8 on 2 gig of ram but it struggles with you tube downloads
i upgraded the ram to 4 gig and run win xp win 7 and win 8.1 on the hard drive
Frist Turn off window update on those laptop where you have window 8 then take a window 8 dvd and reinstall it on this laptop then activate it on this laptop in this case you have to close you window automatic on one laptop at a time then you can use one window on both laptop. you can follow my blog also-configureserver.blogspot.com
