Windows media player will play very few DVD's on it's own. It needs to work in conjunction with a decoder. You can find a decoder, ie... Power DVD, WinVid, InterVid, etc..., at Dell's support site or I use Power DVD on mine with no problems. Also, the configuration that you have will not have a noticeable or any effect on videos. They will play fine, once you have a decoder.

I'm sure you already have checked this but it's worth a try. Did you check in the control panel area under the Power Options for how long it's set to time out the screen? Sometimes people don't know that they can change how long the screen will stay lit, then time out. In that same area you can set the time for timeout of the Hdd to sleep, closing the lid and what the power button actually does.

You might need to go into the computer's BIOS and see if it's set to boot from a bootable CD or USB device. If it's set to only boot from the hard drive, it won't even look at other drives. Different computers use different ways to access the BIOS: you might try pressing the F12 key when the boot logo appears. Check your owner's documentation - it should tell you the procedure for your computer.
