Installed the 4-in-1 driver off of HP's website. Also installed the required USB communications driver on HP's website. When the driver software runs, it searches for the printer and can't find it. Printer is turned on. Tried turning it off and turning it on. Tried using all 4 USB ports on the ASUS. Stuck!!

I recently have the same problem with a HP Photosmart Printer with windows XP ( when I connected the printer the message USB device unknown message appeared) Before wasting your time unistalling and reinstalling driver, I strongly recommend this:
Change the USB cable for a new one THAT WORKS PROPERLY FOR USB 2.0 FULL SPEED . What does it mean ?. Well if you have an older cable is very probably that it doesn't work well at USB2.0 full speed (480Mbps) because it's not properly shielded, if you buy a new one check specifications on the box to see if it is prepared for 480Mbps. Testings in other PCs is not relevant unless you're ABSOLUTLY SURE that USB ports are working at full speed in those PCs
I changed old cable for a new one ( Belkin), and no more problems.
SOURCE: LaserJet 6L with Vista using Parallel to USB Cable
It can be done tested by Thoo personally 6L printer prints well on vista too
The printer end should be connected to 25 pin parallel cable, converted to the USB on the notebook end of the wiring
To solve your printing problems locate vista driver, since i have tested vista works fine on HP 6L printers
make sure you select the correct O/S and assign in to the USB virtual port 05
