Just so you know:
Sorry, no free maps. I know I've tried. You either live with
the old map or buy the latest version.
I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)
BUT FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOUR
Garmin before you load any maps.
You can get that FREE at Garmin here:

To download the latest unit
software visit Garmin website: www.garmin.com/webupdater
After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin
website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect
your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your
computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start",
"Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to
do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.
Does this help? Let us know. Thanks.
many thanks jim...
i expected a huge phone fight over licences etc,but after a whole 45 seconds the guy at garmin reset everything and its updating as i type.
again many thanks to you and they folks at garmin support.
does the cockles good to find a net company that actually excels these days ;))
heres something i havent typed in years.."problem solved"
I too have purchased the nuvi 205w(T) and downloaded the map update from Garmin's site - only to find that I have lost all UK road layouts; they are simply just straight roads between towns / cities.
I'm struggling to resolve the problem after spending 50 minutes on the phone to tecnical support and still didn't get to speak to anybody, emails to Garmin are answered as well. If anybody can provide a ray of light I would be most grateful.
My personal assessment is that the 'free map update' has a bug in it that when you click on the UK & Ireland maps it installs the maps for Spain leaving simple main road navigation in UK, which is not acceptable. I'm sure there are other issues as well because the POI's have disappeared.
Any assistance gratefully received.
You need to call Garmin and explain what happened. They will take your original registration information and update it to cover the relacement unit. You may need to provide some documentation from the store to Garmin showing you returned the original unit.
