We have a customer's DesignJet 500 printer that says all the ink cartridges are empty - it is flashing four exclamation points, and the display says to install ink cartridges. All four inks are new, but the Magenta is empty. We had a bad ink tube assembly that drained the magenta ink right through. We replaced the ink tube assembly and the ink supply assembly: the box that holds the cartridges and includes the ink sensors. Black, Cyan, and Yellow are still completely full - I can feel the weight of the ink in them, but the machine insists they're empty. Does it need a new main board, or am I neglecting something else?
Are you sure its exclamation mark?..
This warning message related to print head. (warn out). When you are replacing ink tube assembly use dummy print heads to do the priming (new ink tubes are empty & they have to fill with ink)..
Action: Remove all cartridges and print heads, switch on the printer follow the screen message.(Insert cartridges first next dummy print heads).once its recognizes cartridges then it switch over to print heads, insert dummy print heads. Once printer recognized the dummy print heads, printer will perform priming, during priming dummy print heads will filled with respective inks.(follow the display message)Remove dummy print heads & insert normal print heads. Wait till printer recognizes print heads, load the paper & wait till performs the calibration, once calibration is successfully done issue closed.
If calibration not successfully done, check align print out for which print head is not printed properly, replace it..
Pl ensure that minimum 50% ink levels required in cartridges before performing the priming. Best of luck..
Thanks. I'd started on the refilling proceedure, but was held up by this error. I had a replacement Magenta ink ctg. left, and installed that, and it's error went away, showing a full ctg. I believe the machine is insisting on band-new cartridges, even though it hasn't printed a drop of ink from the new ones I put in before replacing the tube assy. Apparently the chip in the ctg. says it's been used, and the printer rejects it, though it still reports that it's filled to capacity. I have the other three colors on order, and I think that it will start the filling process when they're installed. I was also thrown off by the fact the machine's display never tells me to put in the dummy cartridges. It says to remover the real ones, and I had the dummies standing by, waiting to be prompted to install them. There is no such prompt in this model; I just have to put them in when I take the real ones out.
I wrote that this model does not prompt me to install the dummy printheads used in the ink tube filling utility. I was wrong - I just hadn't made it that far. It tells me to remove the real heads, then, one or two steps later tells me to install the dummy heads. Until I had the new ink cartridges I couldn't get to that point.
As per your previous information you don't have dummy print heads, Am I right?. Order for dummy print heads or find out used dummy print heads, this is only option in front of you..Part No for dummy print heads C7769-60164..Once dummy prints are arranged do the following process. 1. check do you have dummy print heads 4 nos. 2. Normal print heads 4 nos, in good health condition ( if print head nozzles are clogged/dried up, priming will happen but print head alignment will not happens). 3. All cartridges should be original with minimum 50% ink levels required. low ink levels, refilled cartridges are not allowed... Work Process: Take out print heads & cartridges from the printer. Press & Hold up & down arrows power on the printer, wait till service menu appears on screen, release keys, scroll to service utilities, enter.. scroll to Ink tube replacement... enter..follow the screen message..(Printer performs to replace ink tube assm ask to switch off for replace the ink tubes, just switch off the printer wait little whilw switch on again) insert cartridges one by one later dummy print heads, once priming is completing printer ask for normal print heads, follow the screen messages care fully..once every thing is through, printer will perform print head alignment..once its completed, printer is ready to print..# Before replacing any part pl read the installation procedure comes along with the part.. You are troubled because of not reading the installation manual.. Still if you are facing any problem pl mail me: [email protected]..

You may be going too far with the repair,
It may be that the old tube system has incorrectly updated trhe cartridge chipset. the first thing you should try is a NEW set of HP Original ink cartridges. This is a problem I have seen many times 1 poor cartidge chip can ruin a full set ( all Coluors) and until all cartidges are replaced each new single insertion writes off anothe ink cartidge as fully used when its brand new .
It was the ink cartridges. Each one has a chip inside, and I guess the printer recognized them as having been installed before the ink tube assemble was replaced, therefore they were not new. The printer needs a lot of ink to fill the new tubes, and refuses to accept cartridges that aren't brand-new, so it marked these ones as Empty, even though it recognized that they still were at 99% capacity. Odd and unhelpful, but that's how it looks. Replacing the other 3 colors fixed everything. The machine recognized them as full, ran the ink tub filling utility, and prints beautifully. I called HP tech support, and they sent replacements inks to the customer, who returned the "empty" but full ones to HP.

SOURCE: ink cartridges
Go through your standard print procedure. File>print then look for the properties button which is usually on the top right of the window. Press Properties and look for either Printing in B/W or grey scale. That should prevent your color cartridges from printing. After you check that box, you should be able to print black only.
SOURCE: A blank page when coping or printing in black.
As with all of the solutions I've provided on this and the other HP88 printers, the problem is that the black printhead has become clogged due to the conditions the printer is kept in.
For some reason the pigment black ink in the HP88 printhead is particularly prone to clogging when used in hot, dry conditions where there is air conditioning or similar...
The only solution I have found to date is to replace the black ink with a dyebase alternative and use that with a new printhead. Finding this solution took me about 14 printheads and a lot of head scratching so it wasn't easy...
Finding a dyebase alternative may be difficult but whatever you do, make sure you purchase a remanufactured original HP OEM, not one of the all plastic designs with no black rubber bulb in the bottom of the printer. They fail and leak a LOT!.
Hope that helps..

SOURCE: I installed two new cartridges, black and magenta.
If you have successfully installed ink cartridges before, tried powering down and back up again, posted for a solution on FixYa, then your printer must be factory-serviced.
If you are changing ink cartridges for the first time, find your manual and do the procedure step-by-step. The cartridge-moving mechanisms and sensors are delicate and must operate in a specific sequence.
Never turn off a printer while it is still making noise (unless there is smoke).
Check that the protective tape has been removed from the cartridges before installation. Check that the cartridges are firmly seated by visually inspecting that they are lined up with the other cartridges.
SOURCE: I have a HP CP1700
Make sure that printer ask for ink cartridges. It can ask for yellow and magenta print heads!!!Check this again and if need replace the print heads.
