If you are seeing vertical streaks/black lines your primary corona wire is dirty and or the fax scanner may be dirty.
1)To clean the corona wire you take the drum unit and toner cartridge and place it on disposable paper to avoid spilling.
2) Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by sliding the blue tab from right to left several times.
3) Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position.
4) Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge.
5) Close the front cover.
Caution: if you do not return the blue tab to the home position it may repeat the black lines.

POWER PURGE!!

Hold down the menu key. While still holding the menu key, unplug the machine and plug it back in. Do not let go of the key until the machine reboots and the screen says "maintenence". Hit the following keys: 7, 6, 4,black start. The machine will then go into "power purge" or deep clean mode for about 5-7 minutes. When complete hit: 99 to get out of maintanence and reboot. Be sure to have extra ink cartidges on hand as it does use up a lot of ink but this process works the best every time when the printer wont print

SOURCE: We have a Brother MFC 7420. Printing now give long

That's usually a bad cartridge, but can be from the wire not being cleaned by the slider, or a worn drum. If it's close to time for the drum to be replaced, I'd start there. The number of pages between drum changes is not a hard rule, but a generality. Drum wear depends on paper used, humidity, OEM or remanned cartridges, total page coverage, etc...

Black line down left side of paper MFC8480DN

If it is only when copying, the problem is with the scanner, but if you are printing from computer and it still does that, you most likely need to replace the drum unit. Even though you can reset drum many times, they do go bad after a few resets. eBay has them at a very low cost. I'll share a link bnelow of an example: TN650 Toner DR620 Drum Combo for Brother MFC 8480DN HL 5370DW MFC 8690DW...

When i am faxing do i put the paper up or down on this thing brother mfc-7420

Either lift the lid lay the paper in print side down, or put it into the document feeder print side up. In either case the top edge of the page should be at your left to appear right-side up at the receiving, but that's a minor point.

Black line down the paper on copy mode. Ok in print mode.

There is most likely something on your scan glass that is blocking the scanner. Clean of both pieces of glass that are there when you flip open the ADF, or top cover. Try to copy again. If it is still there then there is either something on the scanner piece that moves back and forth to scan or one of your scan LEDs is burnt out and the scanner will have to be replaced.
