Heater only blows cold air

Heater started blowing intermittent hot and cold air. The mechanic said the heater core was fine and that it was electrical. We replaced the switch unit which was what he suggested, but now it only blows cold air. What are we missing?

    They told me the water pump was bad 2 years ago, but can still drive it with no noise and mostly a problem just in winter. If I rev the engine or drive around in 3rd gear then the heat works. Also works better on freeway than around town. Problem is it costs a fortune to replace water pump since they had the brilliant idea to put it in the middle of the engine.

    Did you check any & all fuses that have to do with the heater, blower motor, etc?

    the fan only blows on high speed and will not blow hot air, the front driver floor board is wet, and the car overheats after driving around hour and half. What do you thinks is wrong and how can I check myself the isssue?

Check both heater hoses under hood to see if they get hot, if they do the heater is fine. need to check to see if the selection doors inside the unit are opening and closing.

Low coolant, if there is an air pocket in the engine it will make it to the heater core. Once there , the air coming out is cold/cool. Once the coolant fills the heater core, it gets hot. If the coolant is fine hot or cold, then have the HVAC system scanned.

Why is my heater blowing cold
Most likely it is the heater control valve that shifts air from blowing across your heater core to your air conditioner core.

If your fan works and your car is fairly new..meaning your heater core isn't dirty and full of craap...then it is the climate cotrol valve.
If you are lucky, it might be a thermostat that is bad and blocking hot water from entering your heater core. Bottom line, if hot water doesn't circulate thru that little heater core, you won't get heat.
You might be able to look under the hood and grab the hot water lines that go thru the firewall and feed your heater core. If they feel cold to the touch after engine has warmed up, then you aren't getting circulating water to the heater core. If they feel nice and warm, then the heater core is fine, but your climate control valve has closed off the fan that blows across the core to disperse heat into the cabin

If the hose from the water pump is hot & the return from
the heater core is not ,then there is a control valve somewhere

1986 VW Golf heater blows cold air
The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.
if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.

Heater doesn't blow hot air
First check the coolant level in the radiator. Check your heater core hoses on the firewall underneath the hood. Let the car come up to temp. and feel the two hoses. If only one of them is getting hot you may have bad heater core or a bad heater control valve.
