Solution one: Check the fax connections Use the following steps to check the physical connections, and then use the HP Fax Test Service.

Step one: Check the physical connections

1. Disconnect the telephone cord from the HP fax product, and then examine the connector on the end of the cord. Make sure that the cord has only two wires. Figure 1: Two-wire telephone cord

2. Connect one end of the telephone cord to the telephone jack, and then connect the other end of the cord to the port labeled 1-Line on the back of the HP fax product.

If other devices need to use the same telephone jack, make sure that they are connected to the 2-Ext port on the back of the HP fax product.

2. Pick up the telephone receiver and listen for a dial tone. Make sure that you can dial out using the telephone keypad.
   If there is a dial tone and you can dial out using the telephone, the HP fax product is connected correctly to a working telephone cord and telephone jack. Does your telephone have where you can use a T1 jack ? If yes that means, you can use a T1 jack box that looks like a router that you can connect one end to the main telephone and connect the other end to as many other telephone you will want to connect to it.

HP fax products are designed so that other telephone equipment can be connected on the same line as the fax. The unit must be connected first using a two-conductor fax/phone cable like the one that shipped with the HP product. Using a four-conductor telephone cable may cause problems receiving faxes or calls.

There are two different types of phone cables. There are two-conductor phone cables like what originally shipped with the HP fax product and there are four-conductor cables. HP fax products are designed to work with a two-conductor phone cable. Look at the end of the cable and verify that it has only two copper leads or wires. Replace any four-conductor cables with a two-conductor cable. Only two-conductor phone cables should be used to connect the all-in-one to the phone line.

Step one: Connect the phone line to the fax
The fax will have two or three sockets (or jacks) for phone lines. Some of these may have a removable plastic plug in them. These sockets will be labeled with text, To Wall Jack , or with a graphic of the wall jack. See Figure 1 below.

Plug the two-conductor telephone cable that came with the HP product into the telephone wall jack. Then, plug it into this socket as shown below.




In areas with above ground telephone lines and electrical storms (lightning), it is a good idea to purchase a telephone line surge suppressor and connect it between the telephone wall jack and the fax. This will help prevent damage to the fax from a lightning-caused power surge on the phone line.

Step two: Add other phone-line devices
To connect other telephone devices, use the other socket (or sockets) on the fax. These are identified by text or with a graphic of a telephone and/or computer.

Connect a caller ID unit between the fax and the telephone.
Use the information below that matches the devices you need to connect.

Fax and telephone
Connect a single-line telephone to one of the added sockets on the fax. The telephone will share the same phone line as the fax. See the illustration below.




Fax, answering machine, and telephone
When a telephone answering machine and telephone are connected, connect the answering machine to the fax and then connect the telephone to the answering machine as shown below.




Fax and computer modem
To use a fax and a computer modem on the same phone line, connect the fax to the computer modem. The modem socket on the computer may be labeled Line or Wall jack .




Fax, computer modem, and telephone
To use a computer modem and a telephone with the fax, connect the computer modem to the fax. Then, connect the telephone into the second phone line connector on the computer modem or the third fax socket (if it is available). The image below shows how to connect a computer and a telephone to a fax with two sockets.

1 Connect the handset.

There must be DSL Spliter inbetween telephone line & Wi-fi modem. Please check whether you have connected telephone instrument line with that Spliter or not. According to me, Telephone instrument should connect to telephone line option on DSL Splitter to use same telephone line as internet as well Telephone.

Find a telephone wall-jack.
Buy a 1-to-2 telephone-splitter -- one end plugs into the wall-jack, and the other end provides 2 telephone-jacks.

Connect your telephone to one of those 2 jacks.
Connect your All-In-One to the other of those 2 jacks.
Be sure to use a 4-wire telephone-cable, not an 8-wire network-cable.

If it is FAX only machine, just replace your telephone with your fax. Connect it to the telephone plug asif it is a telephone.
You have to change the settings to FAX only of fax/telephone.
If your All-in-One printer/fax/modem, then you need to download a driver and install the computer.

First of all look for the brand/model and down;oad a driver to install.

Out of box, the AT&T 1738 is designed to operate on a single telephone line. I don't know of any device on the market today that could automatically switch it between multiple telephone lines.

Some options include (in no particular order):

1) Purchasing additional 1738s to cover the other telephone lines.

2) Some cordless telephones on the market are designed to handle 2 telephone lines. Their answering machines will cover both lines. AT&T and Panasonic offer such phones.

3) Check out AT&T's line of NoKSU small office telephone sets. The phones will handle up to 4 telephone lines and 1 model features a built in answering machine. In order for the telephones to function 100% all phones would have to be replaced with the models within the AT&T NoKSU family.

4) If this is strictly a business application, consider purchasing a true business telephone system for the office.

You may have a problem there since the output of the PC is in stereo and the mike of the telephone is in mono.

This is what you can do, use a stereo plug to connect to the PC. Get the left channel (this is the same channel for mono) wire and use this to connect to the mike of the telephone.

Whatever you play on your PC can then be heard by your friend.
