Maytag microwave is not heating

Hi, it sounds like the magnatron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnatron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnatron, they replace the whole oven.

There is a possiblity that the circuit that provides power to the magnatron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it appart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.............

If the oven is STILL heating, but the carousel isn't turning, this problem is commonly attributed to a turntable motor that has worn out and may need to be replaced. The motor is attached to the center plastic piece (called a turntable shaft, turntable ring or coupler) under the middle of the glass tray. The following link explains how to access and replace the motor:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3555716-replacing_a_turntable_motor_on_a_microwa

This is a very simple repair, that usually is not expensive. The price will be determined by the model and manufacturer. This repair can also be performed on an over the range model microwave oven WITHOUT uninstalling it.

You can refer to any of the following websites for comparison:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The first three sites listed have helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you with locating and properly identifying the part(s) you may need.

The average price for a motor is about $35 to $45. If your model number is not listed at all the sites, use the part numbers from the Sears site and use them for your search criteria. The model numbers don't always cross reference, but the part numbers do. The part number for a replacement turn table motor for the model you have listed is W10207571 (listed as item 22 in the parts drawing under the "Internal Controls" parts section.

NOTE: Even though the carousel may not be turning, you can still use the microwave while awaiting parts. You will need to physically rotate whatever you are heating about midway through the cook time to ensure even heating. Early model microwave ovens were not equipped with a rotating carousel and this was the common procedure.

Microwave has no power the powe sourse works

Hi, your microwave can be dead for many reasons.

It may be the fuse, which is usually located on the floor of the oven behind the control panel or between the door switches.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO)/ thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / bodyof the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cookingthen comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causingthe magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should readopen, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

Ifit goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or closethe door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switchmount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a badconnection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, oreven an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test onthe fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, ofcourse) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in,then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meterleads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made andmake a bad fuse appear to be good.

Error code SE on Maytag

The error code SE stands for " Systems Error " which indicates there is a short in the keypad membrane causing the system to lock up. The only option is to have the keypad replaced for normal operation.

The microwave turns on and appears to be operating

It sounds like the magnetron may have either failed or is not being supplied with the extremely high voltage required to run it.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

This is a job for a professional but if you are safety clued up, here's instruction.
Make sure the !!!!any capacitors are discharged!!!!! before attempting any sort of repair.
Check the door interlock switches first then the high voltage diode with either an AVO model 8 or moving coil meter on high resistance range for short circuit, (DVM's won't show the fault!), the capacitor can fail and go short circuit, the feed fuse on the primary of the high voltage transformer and then finally, the magnetron is best checked by substitution.
Hope that helps.

On the back seam of the oven where the floor meets

It is strange as the inside of micro wave ovens are usually stainless steel. Clean off the rust, you may find it is not rust at all. If it is rust it will be problem because it means that eventually dangerous radiation will be able to escape from the oven. But clean it first and inspect if there has been any corrosion of the material under the rust.
