This is a common problem with all Samsung flat panels. The problem is caused by faulty capacitors on the Power board. It is an easy fix if you have basic soldering skills. You can also call Samsung and see if your tv is covered under the class action and they will send a tech out to replace the board.

This sounds similar to a known problem with bad capacitors in some Samsung TVs. Even though the TV is out of warranty, Samsung extend the repair period for affected TVs. Get your TV model and serial number off the back and then call Samsung at: 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864). Explain the problem and let them know that you have heard about similar problems and heard they were being repaired out of warranty. In my case, they sent a tech out and did the repair for free. If for some reason they will not do it, the repair is quite simple for someone who can solder and you can find details here: http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/samsung-tv-capacitor-clicking-issue-and-free-repair/

Most likely your backlight inverter is defective. On a set this big, the inverters should be seperate boards. It could also be leaky caps in the power supply, or a defective mainboard that isn't holding the "BL ON" signal. The tv is repairable but most repair shops will want to gouge you on price.

The problem is in the inverter. Replace all the capacitors in the inverter and you'll get it back to work. The inverter is a module inside wich is responsable with the display backlight. You can buy whole module (inverter) from the internet. Before that you should know: the working voltage (can be measured on the central big capacitor pins located near the connector plug); The number of lamps (see how many pink wires get out to the back of the display). Usualy the LCD tv's have inside two boards. One is the logic board and the other is the inverter. Sometimes these two modules are on the same board. If they are separated, they are conected togheter with 4 main wires: ON (power on command), DIM (dimmer command), NEG (negative), POS (positive wire).
