Turned my mac on, it made all the right noises but

sorry to say but its sounds like you hard drive has died

one thing you can try is to take the hard drive out and tap it a couple of times(dont hit it with a hammer but hit it quite forcefully)

if this cures it you need to replace the drive if not then the drive is dead

Display has a herringbone distortion

Video card or perhaps power supply inerference. Try changing the display settings in system preferences. See if that reduces the noise. Common problem with Imacs.

G5 Troubleshooting error 52

A couple of cheap fixes. Worth a try. If it boots, go to disc utility in the utilities folder and restore disc permissions. Then run repair disc. If that fails, buy a copy of Disc Warrior and start from that disc.

Its not here....were is it?

Without further information, it's hard to determine what it is you are trying to ask. If you are referring to a desktop NOT being accessible, it's due to the amount of files you have scattered all over it. You can try browsing through your user account and locating desktop manually. Once you find it, create a folder called "Sort" and place all of your desktop files within it. Do a restart and it should fix it.

My Apple iMac G5 Mac Desktop can't start, it is giving me a white screen and an apple logo in the middle. Help me out

You will need to acquire and install a new power supply. I would suggest having a professional do it, being the iMacs are difficult to work on and not for the novice.

IMac Missing operating system screen

The CD was most likely not burned in the correct way that Apple requires for OS installs. You can't just simple "copy" a system disk. Try getting a hold of an actual legitimate copy of the OS and try again. This is not generally a problem when actual system disks are used.

How do I change my iMac's name?

This is a fun one. Two solutions provided... Easy and Full. Easy Solution, Take it to your local Applestore for a Genius appointment. They can be smug, but they should be able to help. if they are just toooo smug for you, or can't get to one for other reasons, then leave it alone, or your genius might not want to do it (this may be a possibility with good reason*) Full solution: Right now, I am assuming you know your way around a little bit. such as where to create a user account, etc... WARNING! to do this properly, this solution requires creating a ROOT User account, if you have a ROOT User, and are logged into it, the computer essentially thinks your GOD. It will do what you tell it to. it will obey! This is good and BAD! While it allows you to do things you normally could not... it also allows you to accidentally do things like delete all your data in one shot. Also, if anybody gets into this root user account, they then are the computers GOD. If this makes you nervous, and it should, leave things alone. If you really need to change things, and are willing to risk it. 0. Read all first... Understand all first! 1. Back Up!!!!!... If this goes south, your backup is your only chance to save data! 2. Create a RootUser Account... Use a strong password and never forget it... even if you delete the Root User account, the password is tied to the condition of have having one. Do not let anyone else have the password, or be able to figure it out! 3. Log into the Root user Account 4.Remove the User you want to change DO NOT DELETE!!! This is where people drive south! 5. rename the user folder to what you want (this is why you created a root user. permissions are ignored and it allows you to make the changes) user folders are 1 word all lower case version of user name if your user name is "Joe Smith" the name the folder "joesmith" 6. Create a new User Account with the new name and shortname (folder name) 8. it should argue that a folder name of such exists and would you like to use it any way. Yes you would ( this is when everything gets tied back together) 9. Log out, and log back into the correct User account 10. remove the Root User Account. * BTW, if I come off as Smug... I guess being an Ex - AMCT (AKA apple Genius) hasn't wore off. Too, if your local Genius does not want to do it, this is because they are trying to protect your data, and do not want to be culpable for it. Too, Apples policies, might not allow for it. When I was there a few years ago, doing this was in the dark grey areas of support. Not disallowed, but frowned upon. Sorry to say it, but the resposibility of your data is in your hands! Things can and will go wrong. BACK UP!

I think a virus came through my yahoo acct. How do I fix it?

Depending on your OS and revision, its possible, but probably not a virus. You might have downloaded a Windows virus, which would only affect any Windows PCs that come in to contact with your system. Whether or not you have, in fact, a virus on your Mac, I recommend getting an Anti-Virus program.Check out Sophos.com. They have a free version that is fully functional. They usual suspects have Mac versions, too... Symantec and McAfee.Once installed, do a full scan to see if any viruses are detected, and take appropriate action.

Circle icon won't shut down apps on mac

We really need a little more info to answer this correctly. Which Circle Icon are you clicking to "shut down apps"?In OSX, there are three circles or dots at the top-left of every active window. These are, starting at the left, Red: Close this window, Yellow: Hide this window, and Green: Maximize/Restore this window. Note that none of these Close or Quit the Application, only that particular window or instance of that app.To actually Quit a particular application or program, you can use the keyboard command: Command-Q, or you can click the application menu and select Quit.
