Mac will not boot, displays

HelloThis situation comes when the System is not recognized. If you have tried to reformat the drive, then it will still display a folder icon with alternating mac face symbol, simply because no System is installed on the hard drive. To repair this, you should consider reinstalling the system using a System DVD (to boot from the dvd, hold the "c" key at startup.Damien

I have an iMac G5,

It is having difficulty with the system folder, try starting with the left hand shift key held down, if not boot from CD, select language as if you are going to do an install, on the next screen the top menu has a utilities folder, in this select disc utlility, select your hard drive and then select repair, let this work and if OK or repaired (if it says it cannot repair then you need a repair utlity like DiskWarrior) then repair permissions, this can take a while with a big HD, then in utilities select start up disk and select your HD and restart.

Try booting from your OSX cd, put it in and hold down "C" as it is booting up. If you can boot from the CD then you might be able to repair the disk using the **** utility in it or worst-case, re-install OSX.

It could possibly be a faulty connection inside the computer too.

You may need to take it in for repairs if you want to try and save the files (before reinstalling or opening up the computer!).

Hope this helps!

Bad capacitors often cause the no-turn-on problem. This page has a good picture of what bad caps look like in the G5. If you see this trouble in your G5, you might be able to get this going. Kits of capacitors are available (here's the place I got some from) and If you're comfortable with electronic soldering and replacing parts on a printed circuit board, changing out the duds may be all that's needed. I've seen three of these now. On one, there was just a single bad cap that was keeping the computer from starting up. It's certainly worth looking into.

Apple 20 in Imac G5 turn on for about 40 second

Sounds like you need to reset your SMU and NVRAM:

To reset your SMU:
  1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
  2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
  3. Wait 10 seconds.
  4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
  5. Let go of the power button.
  6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

To reset your NVRAM:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
If those don't resolve the issue, your computer will probably need service. Good luck!

Do you charge a fee????

Chances are that your friend's computer has a hardware problem, not something in software that you can scan for. Capacitors on the main board that go bad are a common source of many problems, including freezing and no startup.

It's a fairly simple matter to replace the bad parts and get the computer going again, although some experience with electronic repair, soldering, and the proper tools are required to prevent damage to the board during the repair.

Several sites offer information about how to open the computer, showing where to find the usual culprits, and giving pictures of what the caps look like when they are bad. There are several with videos as well. Kits that give you all the capacitors needed are available from several sources. Here's the place I used, but you can find others.

Good luck with the repair, and thanks for using Fixya!

The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of your Mac computer.

It is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls back lighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

• If the computer is on, turn it off.
• Disconnect all the connections going into the Mac except for the Power cord.
• Once all connections have been disconnected, remove the power cord from the Mac.
• Wait 20 seconds.
• Reconnect the keyboard, mouse and power cord back into the computer.
• Press the Power button to restart the Mac computer.

Try this procedure and if it works, great, If it does not, just reply back to this post
and let me know.

Regards,

How do i get my mac to save a video? It keeps

When your computer says memory, it might not mean hard disk space. There are two main types of memory in a computer, the hard disk and the RAM. The hard disk stores all of your programs and data, but is slow to access. The RAM holds all the information about what you're doing at the moment, and is vital for working with videos. Could you let me know how much Hard Disk space you have, and how much RAM is installed in your iMac? You can find the amount of spare hard disk space at the bottom of any finder window, and you can find out how much RAM is installed by viewing Apple -> About this Mac.
Hope that helps, if you let me know those numbers I'll be able to help you a bit more.

My G5 tower is no longer recognising my external

Best thing you can do is to determine whether its the port or the camera.
If you go to the Apple in the upper-left corner, and go to "About this Mac", then click "More information", it will start System Profiler. On the left side, under "Hardware", click on "Firewire" and see if your iSight shows up. If you have another FireWire device, plug it in, and see if it shows up there as well. The solution could just be a dead iSight (hopefully!). The worst case scenario is a dead FireWire bus...
If you have a dead iSight, I'd guess that ebay would be your best resource at this point. If its a dead bus, I'm afraid it won't be terribly cost effective to fix it :-/
