Hello, if they are hearing echo, you are speaking too loud. Or have the receiver too close and talking too loud. Or the person on the other end of the line has phone line problems.

No speaking ability

The mute button on these is the little black button on top of the earpiece. It will only be on if you turn it on during a call. If you turn the headset off, the mute button goes off as well.
Check the compaibility 'wheel' on the side of the base station. The most common setting is 1 but some phones use 2,3 & 4. Just try it on each setting until it works. Other than that, check the microphone volume adjust setting underneath the base (ABCD switch) and see if changing that makes a difference. Of course there is always a small chance that the microphone is dead.

Plantronics cs50 head set with lifter has STATIC

Try a system reset:
1.  Lift the headset off of the charging cradle, but make sure the headset is turned off.  It will be off if the green light on the front of the base is not lit.  If it's not, push the call answer button once to turn it off.
2.  Push the call answer button and the mute button at the same time and hold them down.  The mute button is the black little wheel at the top of the headset.  Use the tip of your finger to push it straight down and hold it while holding the call answer button.  A green light on the headset will flash for 2 series of flashes.  Wait until the end of the second series then let go of both buttons.
3.  Put the headset back on the charging cradle and wait 30 seconds.  Lift it back up and try to use it.  If this doesn't work, repeat one more time and then disconnect the power from the base and plug it back in.

Headset CS50

It sounds like you need to re-register the earpiece to the base. To do this, use the following steps:
1. Return the headset to the
Headset Docking Cradle

2. Press and hold both the
Speak Volume Adjust Buttons (+/-)
on the back of base unit for a
minimum of 5 seconds. The
Red Power Indicator will then
flash

3. Press and hold the Headset
Mute Switch (black button on top
of earpiece) for a minimum
of 5 seconds. The On-line
indicator (green light on boom)
will then illuminate.

4. Subscription completion is
indicated when the Power
Indicator is fully illuminated
and the On-line Indicator is
extinguished.

5. If subscription fails within 2
minutes the headset will return
to the un-subscribed state.

On my plantronics cs540a i do not get a beep to let me know there is an incoming call.

If your Plantronics CS540A is not providing a beep to let you know there is an incoming call, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Check the settings: Make sure that the ringer volume is turned on and set to an appropriate level. You can adjust the ringer volume using the button on the base of the Plantronics CS540A or through the settings on your phone or computer.
  2. Check the mute button: Make sure that the mute button on the Plantronics CS540A or on your phone or computer is not engaged.
  3. Check the connection: Make sure that the Plantronics CS540A is properly connected to the phone or computer.
  4. Check the battery level: Make sure that the battery on the Plantronics CS540A is charged and that there is enough battery power to provide a beep.
  5. Check the software updates: Make sure that the Plantronics CS540A has the latest software updates installed.
  6. Check the settings of your phone or computer, there could be an option to turn off the ringtones of the headset.
  7. Check the volume of the ringer, it should be set to an appropriate level.
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to contact the manufacturer or a professional technician for further assistance. It's recommended to check the user manual of your device before trying any of the above steps, as the process of troubleshooting the ringer can vary depending on the model and manufacturer.
