Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC - Page 8 Questions & Answers
Restoring Backup to New Axim
The backup utility included on your Dell Handheld will backup your data to a storage card. You can restore on your replacement handheld from that storage card.
From your Host PC, you can go to Tools | Backup/Restore and do a backup to the Host PC, and you can then restore after syncing the replacement handheld for the first time.
Why does my axim power on by itself?
I've noticed that mine will power itself on as well. But is usually goes like this...
1. Sync with computer
2. Unplug cable
3. Turn off Axim
4. ~1min later...Axim is on and at the password screen
Infrared Beaming Problem
My Axim is behaving the same way. I find that if I try to transfer something from my Palm IIIc to my Axim via infrared, it rarely sends the data immediately, and it often times out. I have found that I can often get it to work if I request the transfer on the Palm and then "stimulate" the Axim via tapping a menu selection or by momentarily blocking the view between the devices.
NO file transfers are working!
Try deleting the partnership in ActiveSync on the PC, and then create a new partnership. I saw this problem, when I connected the first time to a PC. I tried connecting to a second PC, and had no problem. When I went back to the first, it required that I create a new partnership, and no problem with the connection.
Using Axim with Linux?
I think the official answer from Dell is that Linux is not supported (as they don't include a conduit for it)....though I have a feeling it can be done....
As for running Linux on the Axim, there hasn't been anything developed yet. Chances are most of the stuff for running Linux on the iPAQ would work for the Axim, though there would have to be some tweaking to account for the hardware variance.
Problems with SD Slot on Axim
I once used Mazingo on another pocket pc. I had it set to use the CF card in it. It did the same thing it's doing on yours now. It caused word to take a long time to open and it loaded the pages in it really slow. I stopped using it for that reason. I think it may just me the Mazingo program.
Is it a problem with Axim -- automatical reset !
There are two different power conservation options that you want to look at. The first is in Settings -> Backlight and can control having the backlight turn off if the device isn't in use. The second is in Settings -> Power which has a setting to turn off the device after x minutes. That could be on, and that is what you are seeing. If the device is actually resetting itself (all running applications close), then you could have a bigger problem and you should contact Dell support.
Two Axims on the same desktop computer
You can both do it, just not simultaneously - meaning don't sync at the same time. You can set up your own partnership with your own preferences. Using Outlook profiles or Windows XP/2000 user settings, you can even have your own Outlook database to sync against so you don't comingle data. Post back with your OS if you need help getting this set up.
How to connect Axim to internet?
It doesn't come with one, but you can use the CF slot. Just pick up a CF Modem, ethernet card or wireless card (for a wireless network) and you are ready to go.
Can Axim import Palm data?
Yes, Palm data like calendars and contacts can be transfered various ways including through Outlook or via infrared.
Soft & Hard Reset
Correct, a hard reset restores the PPC to its origional state. Soft resets are similar to rebooting your desktop computer.
You can backup your device with either ActiveSync or the included utility. I don't have a device so I can't give you exact steps, but I believe what you are seeing is where the device will store the backup. You have to put it on a storage card in most cases, not back on the device.
Wi-Fi adapters?
I used my firiend's AXIM some today while he is out (still waiting on mine...) and he has the Linksys one that is on buy.com for about $63 plus rebate....
USB Sync Cable
I dont' think so. No other PDA does - it would be quite a drain on the USB port. It isn't like powering the tiny LED in an optical mouse.
Palm data and ActiveSync
You won't be able to do that. Lotus Organizer as well as Lotus Notes and OutHook are PIM some plus e-mail, just like Palm Desktop is a PIM. So you can have the Treo sync with Lotus Organizer AND have the Axim sync with it also it is because there are conduits buit for them. There is a middleware that allows both to talk to one. Now if you can find a piece of software out there that will sync a PocketPC with Palm Desktop, I'm sure a lot of Palm converts would love to know that.
1GB IBM Microdrive
I got my 1gig microdrive last Wed. UPS says my Axim is going to be delivered today. I'll let you know how the microdrive performs as soon as he axim is charged.
Is Axim ARM or MIPS?
The XScale processor in the Axim is compatible with the StrongArm (a.k.a. ARM) processor. When obtaining software, treat the Dell Axim X5 (or any other Windows CE device that has an XScale processor) as if it had a StrongArm processor in it.
