Recieving and sending E-mail

The Dell Axim X5 has Microsoft Pocket Outlook pre-installed, so use that instead of MSN Messenger to e-mail. MSN Messenger is just meant for instant messaging.
You can fill in your e-mailaddress and server-data, while offline, but to sign in with any of those programs you'll need an internet connection, so you first need to connect to a wireless network, that's in range. If there is no wireless network, you have access to, you'll not be able to use these programs.

What do you mean with a wireless card? Is there no wireless card in the PDA, or don't you have a wireless network? To set up a wireless network, you need a wireless router, or WLAN-router.

Success, and just ask if you need more help

Dell Axim X5 Screen Back Light Trouble

Holding down the record button on these units turns the backlight on and off, since this is hardware controlled you should try this first. If you've performed a hard reset and held down record then this is most likely a physical fault, check with Dell to find out your warranty status and find out about the availability of replacement parts.

Does Axim Have a serial Connector

From what Dell shows in their downloadable manual there may be a fabled serial connector from the cradle and the travel cable. Dell does not offer it at this time. I only read once that Dell may offer if Mid Jan. I would bet that you would have better luck waiting for an aftermarket company to make one *IF* the unit supports serial. I honestly don't see why Dell wouldn't offer serial but there is always that chance that they will support USB only. I have yet to receive my unit.

Unrecognized Card message

Look down the slot in the Axim. One of the pins is likely to be bent. If it can be straightened it will work again but may break.
I had this problem while under warranty. The unit was replaced but that was y e a r s ago.

Dell Axim + Tomtom. Routeplanning error

The error during planning is a map error not an OS error. It will give you this warning if you try to nav somewhere that it cant see any way of getting to because there is a gap somewhere en-route. Normally its the last 100 yards or something. The workaround is to nav to an adjoining road or somewhere very close to where you want to end up. Oddly or maybe coincidentally (which I doubt at 60,000 miles per year) I have only had this happen on the new maps.

Backup battery

Install Active Sync latest version off of the Microsoft site. Turn off automatic SYNC ..... change it to manual sync.

Then check the connections on the watch battery----- you may need to add a piece of tape to the battery lid to get a tight connection. Carefully bend out the tab that contacts the battery. Wipe the battery off with a clean rag before installing.

Dell X5 backup battery

Hello,

I will attempt to answer both questions and give some insite.

1st- No, the charger does not recharge the backup battery. The battery is the same kind of battery as you would have in a watch which at this time are not rechargable, but that would be a great idea.

The way it works is that when the main battery is charged the X5 uses that as its energy source. Only when the unit is off and or the main battery is depleated does the back-up battery kick in. Hence the name (back-up battery).

As for a solution to your problem. It sounds to me like you have a problem with your primary battery. I don't believe that it has much time left or it may just be a corrosion problem. I would try clening the battery contact point on the battery as well as on the X5 with some alcohol and a q-tip. I would also check the contacts where the back-up battery is. I have worked on watches before and their batteries will sometime cause some corroding.

Axim X5 Align Screen Loop

I am by no means an expert but I have had the same problem that you are having and I found that after I took my X5 apart and cleaned around the underside edge of the plastic housing frame that was at the edge of the screen the problem went away. I also cleaned the front of the screen very well and put a new back-up battery in. I have not had the problem since.

Dell Axim 5 + TomTom navigator GPS ?

for those in the States at least, the economics. Many new vehicles here come with GPS and mapping options today for a nominal amount. I was also looking at this Garmin portable. I am not familiar with what is available in Europe though, I know the cellular technology is far ahead of the States. I just thought I would throw this out there. Good luck with your efforts.

SD memory...is there a limitation for the Axim?

The limitation is only what is available. Currently, the biggest SD card you can easily get would be a 512mb, though the 1gb's are on the way.

Problem with allignment

Markins- You should work for Dell. I called them several weeks ago about this problem, and they were quick to tell me that is was not in warranty any more so there was nothing they could do. I found your posting and I did exactly as you stated. My X5 hasn't worked this well in months. I sure wish Dell would pass this info on, but I guess there are a lot of people that just buy a new on.......Thanks for your help! Quote: Originally Posted by Markins This is a post I made a few days ago on the Dell Axim Forum. The problem progressively got worse, so I decided to open it up and see what was going on. This is what I found: The touch screen lays on top of the display screen. At the bottom of the touch screen, directly below the "Inbox Button", there is a flex cable (flat mylar with conductors). I found that the contacts from the button had scratch through the mylar on the flex cable and would short out. I suppose this would scramble the decoding from the touch screen. To correct the problem, I cut a small piece of electrical tape and laid it across the damaged area on the flex cable. I reassembled it using just the screws (I left the rubber sides and feet off) and tested it. After I was sure it was working correctly, I finished assembling it. You can find detailed disassembly instructions on the web by doing a search for X5 screen replacements. The procedure isn't that difficult, just be careful when you remove the rubber sides and feet to lift them slowly and try to keep the glue stuck to the rubber (this makes reassembly much easier). Quick instruction: 1. Do a complete backup of your unit (you will loose all your data). 2. Remove both batteries and any cards. 3. Remove the rubber feet, sides and plugs at the bottom back. 4. Remove 6 screws from the back. 5. You should be able to remove the back of the unit. 6. Unplug the speaker cable (pull straight up on the plug). 7. Lift the motherboard and screen away from the front cover. 8. Make your repair. 9. Reassemble in reverse order. Hope this works for you, I did this about a week ago and haven?t had a problem since.

Configuration of Axium X5

1. It depends on the brand of CF modem you have. The device should have come with a drivers CD that needs to be installed before attempting to create a connection. 2. This depends on your provider. Generally you should leave it set to DHCP. You will need to copy the settings from your main computer to the PDA 3. Again this depends on the ISP. ALT DNS is just a backup in case the first server fails. 4. Phone# is the ISP's access number.
