Hey guys. i have a 2004 f-150 4x4 with the 5.4 3 valve and my problem is when i start my truck it rattles like a diesel for 2-3 seconds and then stops rattling. runs fine, good power, 53000 miles. been doing this for about 2 yrs. dealer wants to take it apart (yea right) used fram filters, stopped. use motorcraft and pennzoil. any help would be great..

You have timing chain, tensioner, and cam phaser problems. get out you wallet, its not cheap. Your FORD dealer will know what to do.

IS CAR PETROL OR DIESEL? IF DIESEL, IT MIGHT BE THE DIESEL HAS FROZEN. ADITIVES AVAILABLE FOR DIESEL AND PETROL CARS FOR COLD WEATHER. NEED MORE INFO.

Have it diagnosed by an experienced mechanic. It would save you time and money.

i would check all the basics like spark plugs and check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold.With a can of 2+2 carb cleaner while engine is running --if idle goes up or down that is were your leak is--
check egr too, Lee

Those are your valves rattling....cheap gas can do this. Call a local garage and ask them what they would charge to adjust your valves.

test the alternator

Hey mate,

I have a Mazda B2200 from 1985, which has the same R2 diesel motor, and I had this same problem, which was exacerbated by the cold of winter....even here in a mild Melbourne.

Each time you turn the ignition on, the QSS (Quick Start System) powers up the glow plugs for about three seconds. This recycles again about three times, then.....nothing. The QSS reckons that you ought to have the bugger running by now!

In my desperation, I located the cable to the four glow plugs, and ran a second wire from the battery (+) via a push-button switch which I installed on the dash. This is my glow-plug BOOST circuit.

Now, when I want to start from c-c-c-cold, I push the button (with the ignition on) for about ten or fifteen seconds, which gives the glow plugs a goodly time to heat up the combustion chamber, and when I hit the starter, she usually fires up with a rattle, and a cloud of grey exhaust smoke.

BINGO!

(Of course, once the motor has warmed up, there is no need to use this BOOST circuit, for the combustion chambers are already hot enough to detonate the injected fuel.)

Have a go at it, as I know that it works!

if its a petrol motor the valve guide seals are gone or if its diesel the glow plugs arn't working properly and may need looking at.
