These cars are notorious for that.It needs to be "burped" when your car is cold then open the resivoir(coolant).Start the car .As it warms you will notice the tank level will rise.Do not let it boil over!! when it starts to get warm then turn the car off and watch for bubbles in the resivior.add more coolant as the bubbles come out .repeat until no more bubbles come up.The problem with these cars is that an air pocket forms in the water pump.
1999 chevy cavalier still running hot after replacing thermostat. What could cause this?
You need to burp the system, drain the system, and run water tho the whole motor, leave the plain water in the system, run for a day, then, drain it, and then refill it slowly with 50/50 anti freeze, remember to run your heater on high when doing this.
while the car is still running crack the drain cap a little to draw out the air, then close the pit tightly.
Make sure the cap on.
Chek if the fan motor of radiator is working , this fan begin to work when the the increase the temperature , maybe the fan motor is broken o the fan motor relay don't work.
Don't ever buy a Chevy. Just had an engine go bad on my Impala. Car only had 120,000 miles and was serviced religiously every 3,000 miles. The mechanic said that the motor design was poor and that the intake manifold broke causing a catastrophic event in the motor. Buy Ford or foreign. Cars should last longer than 120,00 miles. Had a Toyota once that had 300,000 miles. It would still be going had someone not wrecked it.
Here are two things to check. The lower or suction radiator hose has a spring inside to keep hose from collapsing from suction of water pump. If this spring has rusted out or gone, it will cause the hose to close up, the other requires the services of a radiator shop, to check for presence of carbon monoxide in the coolent. This condition indicates you have internal cracks in the engine's water jackets.

I have the same problem - 1999 Cavalier. I think there is a real problem with Cavalier's cooling system - maybe the cooling system is not adequate - may be why Chevy doesn't make the cavalier no more.

My cavalier continues to overheat and can't figure out why. No leak in radiater, checked thermastat, hose everything seems fine but keeps going straight to hot
I have also changed the thermostat, waterpump, radiator, and still the cavalier overheats!!! I definitely wont be buying GM ever!!!
I also have the same problem with my cavalier 1999 it has had the heat coils changed a new radiater new hoses new thermostat had the head gaskets changed and tuned it up everything was checked and rechecked after 1800.00 of engine work and being told it is all set I get the car back and it runs good for one day and back to overheating. time for me to get a new car
