I have a 1989 Chevrolet Truck CK 2500 2wd. I have had reason to remove the steering wheel and adjoining components to tighten the 4 screws that would loosen from time to time, giving me a sloppy steering wheel. On this latest attempt, the problem has worsened to where there is something loose further inside the column. The 4 brass bolts that bolt the column to the bracket under the dash are tight. The two nuts that hold the column firm up against the plate under the dash are tight also. This problem is clearly further inside the column. When I press the outer shell of the lower part of the column in toward the dash, the wobble goes away. So it is clear there is something else loose in there that holds that component snug in place. What is it, and how do you get to it? THank You For any assistance you can give. Marcus [email protected]

I am experiencing similar problems on an '89 S-10. I have the entire steering column torn apart. There are 4 bolts inside the steering column that come loose and cause the steering wheel to move a little bit. I fixed that problem, but now I'm stuck. I believe there is something that is supposed to attached the shift tube to the gear bowl or the steering column housing, and now thats where I'm stuck. Hopefully you'll be able to tighten those 4 bolts inside the housing and be done with it, good luck. Anyone else have advice?

The component that houses turn signal switch is loose

no 'year make model' so generic guesses only.

Under the covers where the ignition switch and stalks are you will find 4 screws. Remove them and the covers. All the stalks are clamped to the steering column with 2 or 4 screws. Tighten them down and you are fixed. Put the covers back on.

Not a fun job sorry!
1) Remove horn button. 2) Remove steering wheel. 3) Remove turn signal/cruise lever and cancel cam. 4) Remove tilt pins with a pin puller(about $10) 5) Tighten the four loose screws that hold tilt mechanism to the column.
Be happy you do not have airbags.

How to replace the multifunction switch of a 2006 Dodge Ram

REMOVAL
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the screw (2) that secures the tilt steering column knob (1) and remove it from the tilt actuator (3) on the left side of the column.
3. From below the steering column, remove the two outboard screws that secure the upper column shroud (1) to the lower shroud (3).
4. Using hand pressure, press inward on both sides of the upper shroud above the parting line of the lower shroud to release the snap features that secure the two shroud halves to each other.
5. Remove the upper shroud from the lower shroud and the steering column.
6. Remove the one center screw that secures the lower shroud to the steering column (4).
7. Remove the lower shroud from the steering column.
8. Disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from the back of the multi-function switch housing (1).
9. Rotate the steering wheel far enough to access and remove the two screws (4) that secure the switch to the multi-function switch mounting housing (3).
10. Grasp the switch control stalk and pull it toward the left side of the vehicle to remove the switch from the mounting housing.

INSTALLATION
1. Slide the multi-function switch (1) into the multi-function switch mounting housing (3) from the left side. Be certain that the alignment pins on the top and bottom of the switch are properly engaged in the channels of the mounting housing.
2. Rotate the steering wheel far enough to install and tighten the two screws (4) that secure the switch to the mounting housing. Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (20 in. lbs.).
3. Reconnect the wire harness connector (2) to the back of the switch housing.
4. Position the lower shroud (3) onto the steering column (4).
5. From below the steering column, install and tighten the one center screw that secures the lower shroud to the steering column. Tighten the screw to 2 N·m (20 in. lbs.).
6. Position the upper shroud (1) onto the steering column over the lower shroud. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, be certain to engage the gearshift lever gap hider into the opening in the right side of both shroud halves.
7. Align the snap features on the upper shroud with the receptacles in the lower shroud and apply hand pressure to snap them together.
8. Install and tighten the two outboard screws that secure the upper shroud to the lower shroud. Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (20 in. lbs.).
9. Position the tilt steering column knob (1) onto the tilt adjuster actuator (3) on the left side of the steering column, then install and tighten the screw (2) to secure the knob to the actuator. Tighten the screw to 2 N·m (20 in. lbs.).
10. Reconnect the battery negative cable.

The column is very loose and wobbly.

Very common in GM columns. You need to remove steering wheel, use special tool that screws onto center shaft then turn the nut to compress springs, then a snap ring has to be removed. Then remove tool. Remove 3 or 4 phillips screws for turn signal and 2 screw to remove turn signal arm. Pull up on turn signal assembly just enough to get access to 3 phillips screw under assembly which should be loose. Tighten these screws and your wobble will be gone. Good luck. The steering wheel can be removed with a harmonic balancer puller or steering wheel puller. The tool to remove snap ring can be purchased at most auto parts stores I believe for between $15 to $20.

Tilt steering loose inside colum how do i get it apart

It requires two "special tools" - the first looks screws onto the shaft and allows you to remove the circlip holding the steering wheel on. The second is a very small one that pulls a small part out of the side. The tools are available at most places that sell or rent tools. Once you remove the wheel - be careful not to damage the bearings or you will need to replace the set. Once you get to the base there are 4 small Torx head screws holding the swivel mechanism on. Those 4 screws need to be tightened and everything reassembled. If you have never done it before plan on taking a couple of hours. Unless you damage something in the process it does not require replacing any parts so it will only require the 2 tools and your time.
