My mercury villager will not start, its not even sparking, there is also a noise on the left side that sounds like it could be an issue with the computer. any help would be great

Did you remove the battery or did it go flat. Reset security and immobilizer. Does the battery have 12.2 volts.

If it cranks good but won't start, and it doesn't make any horrible noises when cranking, like internal engine issues, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure.

Yes, valve timing could be an issue? Do you have good cylinder compression? Use a compression gage to check. Usually if no compression, the cranking rpms can be faster than normal.

I have a 98 model.
Someone will have to figure out if you are dealing with a no spark or no fuel problem when it won't start.
Could be a long list of causes depending on which issue.

WEAK SPARK MORE LIKELY.SOUND LIKE ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING BATTERY CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE SHOULD BE 12.6 VOLTS. WITH ENGINE RUNNING ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT THE BATTERY SHOULD BE 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS.

need a picture I think. passenger side or driver side? could be the egr tube or bypass tube. Exhaust noise?

Driver side or passenger side noise?

This can be a power steering belt loose or the power steering pump malfunction. To check if it's a belt problem with engine running open the hood and pour a small ampunt of water (1/4 gal or a bit less) over the belt located on the left side of the engine if the sound lowers then it's most likely the belt only.

COULD BE LOW ON POWER STEERING FLUID IF IT'S A BUZZ NOISE AND WORSE WHEN YOU TURN WHEEL.
OR, COULD BE IDLER PULLEY FOR BELTS. COMMON CONCERN.
